Rapsody (real name Marlanna Evans , born January 21, 1988 in Wilson , North Carolina ) is an American rapper .

Career

Marlanna Evans grew up in Snow Hill , Greene County . At a young age she began to be interested in music through her parents' music collection. After MC Lytes video for their song Poor Georgie saw and the Fugees - album The Score sounded, she wanted to start a Rapkarriere itself.

Evans was a member of the hip-hop group Kooley High for a short time, but then got a recording contract as a solo artist with the It's a Wonderful World Music Group of producer 9th Wonder . The first published recording of her was a freestyle on 9th Wonders Mixtape The Dream Merchant, Vol. 2 . Towards the end of 2010, her first own work was the mixtape Return of the B-Girl , with productions by DJ Premier and guest appearances by Big Daddy Kane , Rah Digga and Mac Miller . In 2011 two more mixtapes followed with Thank HER Now and For Everything . The production of these was mainly taken over by 9th Wonder.

Then she went as opening act for Mac Miller Incredibly Dope - tour and together with Phoebe and 9th Wonder on tour.

In 2012 Evans released the EP The Black Mamba , and later that year the album The Idea of ​​Beautiful . The long player was produced by 9th Wonders producer group The Soul Council. Another mixtape followed in 2013 with She Got Game , and another EP in 2014 with Beauty and the Beast .

2015 Evans had with the song Complexion (A Zulu Love) made a guest appearance on Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly that at the 58th ceremony of the Grammys for the Award for Album of the Year nominee. Like everyone else musically involved in the album, she also received an official nomination for the award. But Taylor Swifts won it in 1989 . The next year she released another EP, Crown , and signed to Jay-Z's Roc Nation .

Evans' first release for this label was the album Laila's Wisdom . With that, it achieved its first placement on the Billboard 200 . In addition, the work was nominated for the 60th Grammy Awards for the Award for Best Rap Album and the piece Sassy contained on it for the Award for Best Rap Song . In both categories, however, she lost to Kendrick Lamar .

2018 Rapsody appeared in an episode of Netflix - documentary series Rapture and headed several songs for the compilation Jamla Is The Squad II of her old mentor at 9th Wonder. The following year her next solo album was released, entitled Eve .
