biography
Career as a musician
He began as a student at North Carolina Central University (NCCU) to produce music using the software Fruity Loops , which is why he was often laughed at. In the meantime, however, he is one of the most acclaimed producers of his genre and is mentioned in the same breath as DJ Premier , Pete Rock or the late J Dilla .
In addition to his work for Little Brother, he was best known for two remix albums that spread over the Internet. Once upon a time God's Stepson , a remix of Nas ' God's Son , and Black Is Back , the remix of Jay-Z's album The Black Album . Jay-Z first became aware of him through his remix work and so it came about that he was able to produce the title Threat for his album. He also recorded three titles for Destiny's Child and worked with Memphis Bleek .
In the course of time, other productions or remixes of entire albums followed. B. 3:16 - The 9th Edition of the West Coast rapper Murs or Spirit of '94: Version 9.0 of the underground legend Kaze. He also produced titles for various members of the Justus League musicians' collective, of which he is one of the founding members.
In 2015, the song Put It On Her, produced by 9th Wonder, was released on the collaboration album Big Grams by Big Boi ( Outkast ) and Phantogram. For rapper Anderson .Paak , 9th Wonder 2015 produced the song "The Season" from his album Malibu (2016). For Kendrick Lamar , 9th Wonder produced the song Duckworth from his fourth studio album DAMN in 2017. In 2017, the album Loyalty Is Royalty by Masta Killa , a member of the Wu-Tang Clan , was released, on which the track of the same name produced by 9th Wonder and the track Down With Me (featuring Sean Price ) could be found.
Work as a lecturer
In 2007, 9th Wonder, together with rapper Christopher 'Play' Martin of the former group Kid 'n Play , was declared Artist in Residence by the Chancellor of his former university, the NCCU , after which he gave a series of lectures on the history of Hip Hop .
In the following years he was artist in residence at Harvard , the University of Pennsylvania , the University of Michigan and the University of Virginia .
In addition, 9th Wonder is a member of the Executive Committee of Hip Hop & Rap at the National Museum of African American History and Culture in the Smithsonian , in which an exhibit was dedicated to him.
