Jean Grae (born Tsidi Ibrahim on November 26, 1976 in Cape Town , South Africa ) is an American rapper .

Career

Jean Grae is the daughter of jazz pianist Abdullah Ibrahim and singer Sathima Bea Benjamin . Known at the time as What? What? , she began her career as a member of the group Natural Resource , which she was accepted into by rapper Ocean in the mid-1990s . The group founded their own record label Makin 'Records in 1997 and released several maxi singles , including Negro League Baseball . In addition to her work for the group, she also produced for other artists on the label.

In 1998 the group broke up due to musical differences, but Jean Grae (as she called herself from then on) continued to have numerous appearances on songs by other musicians, such as the Beatminerz and Masta Ace . Both also worked on their debut album, which was released in 2002 under the name Attack of the Attacking Things .

She then released an EP in 2003 and another album, This Week , in 2004 through Babygrande Records . She left this label in 2005 to switch to Talib Kwelis Blacksmith Music . There she wanted to release the already completed album Jeanius , a joint work with the producer 9th Wonder . However, it didn't appear until 2008 after it had already been leaked on the internet . In the meantime, her old label Babygrande released the compilation The Orchestral Files , a compilation of old, previously unreleased recordings , in 2007 . The Evil Jeanius was also published via Babygrade in autumn 2008 , a remixed version of Jeanius by the producer duo Blue Sky Black Death without the participation of Jean Grae himself .

These incidents made Jean Grae frustrated with the music industry , so she announced the end of her career. Soon after, however, she resumed performing live and recording new music. However, she continued to rely on alternative sales channels. She offered her services as a text writer on Craigslist and published several mixtapes and EPs on her own website. In addition, she started acting. They produced their own online - sitcom Life with Jeanie and played in the independent film Big Words with.

In December 2017, Jean Grae got engaged to rapper and producer Quelle Chris , with whom she had worked regularly. Together they released the album Everything's Fine in 2018 through the Mello Music Group .
