Craig Newmark, founder of the craigslist platform

Craigslist is an American advertising website that provides headings such as sales, wanted to buy, jobs, apartments, dating, services and discussion forums.

Craigslist has been online since 1995 and was at times one of the 100 most visited websites in the world. In June 2018, Craigslist was number 107.

According to Craigslist, it lists 80 million ads per month and receives 50 billion page views per month.

The name is derived from the first name of the founder of the service, Craig Newmark . Newmark offered the service in 1995 initially for the San Francisco Bay Area , from 2000 in other cities in the USA and later in other countries.

Forbes business magazine estimates Craigslist's annual sales of $ 500 million, mainly from advertisements in paid sections (e.g. real estate).

history

Craigslist founder Craig Newmark had observed how people help each other in social communities and groups on the Internet (e.g. MindVox and Usenet ). As a newcomer to San Francisco, he decided to create something similar for local events.

In early 1995, he started an e-mail distribution list that was addressed to his friends in the San Francisco Bay Area . Most of the early posts were personally written by Craig Newmark and included compilations of social and other events of interest to software and Internet developers in the area.

After this email list gained popularity and was increasingly used for other topics, Craigslist emerged in its familiar format.

Craigslist, Inc. was registered as a private for-profit company in 1998.

The company is owned by its founder Craig Newmark, its former chief programmer and since 2000 managing director Jim Buckmaster, and between 2004 and 2015, 25 percent of the online auction house eBay . Ebay had acquired the shares from a retired employee and sold it back to Craigslist in 2015 after a long legal battle.

In March 2008, various international editions of Craigslist were added, including in Spanish, French, Italian, German and Portuguese.

Craigslist focuses on the interaction of people on site and only offers its services in Germany in large cities with more than 200,000 inhabitants. Craigslist competed in Germany with Ebay classifieds and Shpock , among others , but so far has not been able to assert itself to the same extent as in English-speaking countries.
