Masta Ace (2001)

Masta Ace (real name Duval Clear ; born December 4, 1966 in Brooklyn , New York , NY ) is an American rapper. He enjoys a reputation as Underground - MC . The single Jeep Ass Nigga (mainly made famous by the new edition Born to Roll ) brought him his breakthrough.

Life

After attending school in Brooklyn, Duval Clear completed a college degree in marketing at the University of Rhode Island from 1983 to 1988. In December 1986, he had already won a rap competition in Queens and a recording session with Marley Marl . As a member of Marley Marl's rap combo, the legendary East Coast group Juice Crew (with MC Shan , Big Daddy Kane , Biz Markie , Roxanne Shanté , Tragedy Khadafi and Craig G ), the New Yorker begins his career, which he is planning on all crashes after graduation. In 1990 he released his debut album Take a Look Around on Marl's Cold Chillin 'Records label , which is often referred to as the hip hop equivalent of Motown Records . Despite consistently good reviews, the record turns out to be a financial debacle. An already completed second album called Shelf Life is no longer released (it will only be released in a limited pressing in 2013). Thereupon Masta Ace separates from Cold Chillin and is looking for a new sales partner. It was found in Delicious Vinyl in 1993 . There Ace and its newly founded Masta Ace Incorporated crew (Masta Ace INC, members were Eyce, Leschea, Reginald Ellis, Uneek, Lord Digga and Paula Perry ) released the album SlaughtaHouse . Although he came from the east coast, he orientated himself on the synth beats of the west coast style, which caused ambivalent reactions in the scene. On the album Sittin 'on Chrome , which was released two years later, the next taboo breach follows: a bassline sampled by Kraftwerk carries the successful Born to Roll . The party series of the same name by DJ Dister in Berlin was named after this piece. In 2013 Masta Ace returned the favor by recording the track Ain't no thing with Dister for his album Roll wit Dis .

In the period that followed, Masta Ace was by no means idle, but did not publish his works on albums. In the second half of the 1990s he produced various songs for other artists under the pseudonym Ase One. A new bang came out in 2000 with the Hellbound collaboration with the new superstar Eminem . That same year, Masta Ace was diagnosed with MS .

Coming on the market in 2001, Disposable Arts is a themed album in which Ace tells the story of an ex-prisoner who goes to a hip-hop school in order to establish a legal existence. In the song Acknowledge , which is the 13th allusion to Disposable Arts, the rapper disses some of his fellow musicians or responds to their verbal swipes. These include The High & Mighty and the rapper Boogieman. The song and Boogieman's rapped answer to the diss can also be heard on the sampler "Lyricist Lounge - Underground Airplay Version 1.0", mixed by DJ Spinbad.

The next album, A Long Hot Summer, is a prequel to Disposable Arts . With the release of the album, Masta announced the end of his solo career, which he revised by going on tour in 2006 (also in Germany).

At the end of 2006 Masta Ace announced that he would no longer be active as a solo artist in the future and would only publish music with the hip-hop formation eMC (consisting of Strick, Punchline, Wordsworth and Masta Ace). A new album called The Show by eMC will be released on March 25, 2008. In May and June 2008 they go on tour and play a. a. 8 concerts in Germany.

His track What is It can be heard as background music in the game Midnight Club II . The tracks Soda & Soap and Take A Walk are also featured in the soundtrack for the game Saints Row .

In 2009 he released the collaboration album "Arts & Entertainment" with Edo G.

In 2012, he and producer MF DOOM released the collaboration album MA DOOM: Son of Yvonne , for which Masta Ace selected instrumentals from the Special Herbes series, which MF DOOM had produced between 2001 and 2005. Although he announced that only his old companion Big Daddy Kane would be featured on the album as an additional guest, in addition to Big Daddy Kane, the album also features guest appearances by Pav Bundy, Reggie B and Milani The Artis.
