Daniel Dumile (born January 9, 1971 in London , England - † October 31, 2020 ), stage name MF DOOM , was a British-American hip-hop artist. He appeared under many different alter egos . His trademark was his metal face mask. The abbreviation “MF” can optionally stand for “Metal Face”, “Metal Fingers” (Dumiles producer alias), “Multi Faced”, “Mic Fiend” or, as with his former close friend MF Grimm , for “Mad Flows”.

Shortly after his birth, his family emigrated to the United States. He lived in Long Island , New York .

Career

Late 1980s to 1994

At the end of the 1980s, Dumile, then still called Zev Love X , founded the group KMD (Kausing Much Damage or A positive Kause in a Much Damaged society) together with his younger brother DJ Subroc and Onyx the Birthstone Kid. For the first time in appearance, he joined in 1989 at The Gas Face of 3rd Bass . In 1991, KMD's debut album Mr. Hood was released on the Elektra Records label .

In 1993, his brother Subroc was killed when he was hit by a train with his car at a level crossing in Long Island.

Nevertheless, the group completed their second album Black Bastards in 1994 . Elektra Records refused to release it because the record company thought the cover was racist. The theme of the album was the overcoming of stereotypical representation of "races" (ethnic groups), which was symbolized ambiguously on the cover by a sambo figure hanging on the gallows . The album was widely used via bootlegs until it was officially released in August 2000 on Dumile's Metal Face Records label.

Dumile, who was still grappling with his brother's death, was disillusioned and struggling with depression . He turned away from the hip-hop scene and moved with his family from New York City to Atlanta in order to better deal with the events there and to take care of his son.

1997 to 2003

In 1997 Dumile began performing again in New York's Nuyorican Poets Café , initially anonymously. He wore a mask when he appeared, which is why only a few initiated knew which MC was hiding underneath. Inspired by Marvel Comics villain Dr. Doom he gave himself the name MF DOOM . Dumile used the long time since Black Bastards to record his solo debut Operation Doomsday and finally to release it in 1999 on the indie label Fondle 'Em Records .

The album Operation Doomsday was re-released in 2000 with the help of MF Grimm. A friendship developed between the two of them and the album The Downfall of Ibliys: A Ghetto Opera was born.

From the beginning of 2002 Dumile released some instrumental albums under the name Metal Fingers , the Special Herbs series. In 2003 he developed other alter egos, such as King Geedorah , a three-headed monster from space, and the villain Viktor Vaughn , which resulted in two more albums. In late 2003 he released Nastradoomus , a remix of Nas ' album Nastradamus .

From 2004

In 2004 Dumile released together with the producer Madlib , this time under the alias Madvillain , the album Madvillainy , which for the first time also became a commercial success. In the same year, Venomous Villain , also known as VV2 , was another album under the alias Viktor Vaughn. Later in 2004 MM came up with .. Food? an album of numerous metaphors related to food on the underground label Rhymesayers Entertainment .

In 2005 a live album called Live from Planet X was released . MF DOOM can also be heard on the Gorillaz album Demon Days on the song November Has Come . At the end of the year the album DangerDoom: The Mouse and the Mask with DJ Danger Mouse was released via Epitaph Records . The two were inspired by the adult swim cartoon series such as Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

A new KMD album entitled Mental Illness and also a collaboration album The John Robinson Projekt with Lil 'Sci were planned. Also in the works were an album with Ghostface Killah under the title "Swift & Changeable" and the second part of DangerDoom.

In 2012 he released the collaboration album MA DOOM: Son of Yvonne with rapper Masta Ace , which is based on the beats of the Special Herbs series that Dumile recorded between 2001 and 2005. In addition to Damon Albarn , Dumile appeared on The Child of Lov's debut album in 2013 .

Dumile's death on October 31, 2020 was not known until December 31, 2020.

The mask

Dumile wore his mask so as not to be judged stereotypically. With it, the appearance or origin of the person wearing it moved into the background, while content and music came to the fore. It also made it easier to identify with the individual characters. The original mask was Dr. Doom, based on the comic Die Fantastischen Vier . The last mask was borrowed from the movie Gladiator and was designed by graffiti artist Lord Scotch.

additions

Obviously, he was an avid fan of old comics , especially the Fantastischen Vier and their fights with Dr. Doom. Dumile's work is also heavily influenced by Japanese Godzilla films. In his role as King Geedorah (another spelling of Gidorah ), he founded a secret rap society called Monsta Island Czars with underground rappers Kong, Rodan, Jet Jaguar and others , although the real identity of the rappers is unknown.

Characteristic of Dumile's productions are the sometimes obscure, often rough or “dirty” sounding samples . He often combined scraps of dialogue from various older B-films in order to put them in a new context for his songs.
