The 36 ° Concorso Eurovisione della Canzone , the official title for this year, took place on May 4th 1991 in Cinecittà Studio 15 in Rome . Sweden won with Fångad av en stormvind just ahead of C'est le dernier qui a parlé qui a raison from France.

particularities

The two first-placed participants France and Sweden both received 146 points. According to the rules valid until 2003, the winner in the event of a tie was decided according to the number of 12-point scores. Since both representatives got 12 points four times each, the number of 10-point evaluations decided, of which Sweden got five and France two. Carola from Sweden was the winner.

For Germany, the group Atlantis 2000 took part with the title This dream must never die , which landed in 18th place. Austria's contribution Venice in the Rain, presented by Thomas Forstner , who took part in the competition for the second time in 1989 , achieved last place with zero points and could not repeat his success of 5th place two years earlier. Switzerland achieved a higher result: Sandra Studer , who competed as Sandra Simó, came in 5th place with Canzone per te .

After Amina from Israel, who started for France, had received 12 points, she went to the Israeli duo Datz and thanked them. This was seen as a kind of sign of reconciliation since Amina is of Muslim faith.

Dragana Šarić, who performed for Yugoslavia under the stage name Bebi Dol , presented herself completely dressed in turquoise with tights and balloon skirts. In addition, she wore a headband adorned with rhinestones, glittering silver pumps and was supported by three background dancers. For Norway, the group sang Just 4 Fun by Hanne Krogh the title Mrs. Thompson.

Originally, RAI wanted to host the Eurovision Song Contest 1991 in Sanremo , home of the traditional Festival di Sanremo . For security reasons - instability in the Balkans as well as in Iraq - the contest was moved to the studio in Rome at short notice, which resulted in some organizational complications for the participating countries.

1The rules said that if there was a tie, the title with the highest score would win the most. Since both Sweden and France had each received 12 points four times, the more frequent 10-point evaluations were decisive for Carola's victory. According to the regulations, in the event of a tie between two or more countries, the number of the highest scores must decide whether to win or lose in a direct comparison.
2 English is the official language of Malta alongside Maltese, which is why Malta was able to compete with English-language songs when songs were sung in their own national language.
