Peppino di Capri
Peppino di Capri (* 27. July 1939 in Capri , Naples Province , as Giuseppe Faiella ) is an Italian singer .
He is musically active since the late 1950s, and was very successful, especially in the 60s and 70s in Italy, with a repertoire from rock 'n' roll and Neapolitan folk music . He introduced the twist in Italy and was also known as the "Italian Buddy Holly ". He took part in the Sanremo Festival 15 times, winning it twice.
Career
Giuseppe Faiella, called Peppino, was born in Capri into a musical family. Together with his friend Ettore Falconieri, he began to perform as Duo Caprese in the bars of the island at a young age . Finally, he expanded the duo to form The Rockers , with Falconieri on drums, Pino Amenta on bass, Mario Cenci on guitar and Gabriele Varano on saxophone. In 1957 the band had an appearance on the television program Primo applauso by Enzo Tortora , which helped her to a record deal with the Milanese label Carisch . After first singles like Nun è peccato and Malatia , the group released the debut album Peppino di Capri ei suoi Rockers . In the following years, other successful titles and regular albums appeared in quick succession; The single Nessuno al mondo , included on the album of the same name, was particularly successful in 1960 . The repertoire included own songs, cover versions of international hits and traditional Neapolitan music .
After hits like I 'te vurria vasa' , Per un attimo and Parlamenti d'amore Mariù , the singer achieved his first number one hit in Italy at the end of 1961 with a version of Chubby Checkers Let's Twist Again . In 1962, St. Tropez Twist just missed the top of the chart; Released under the label Italia in Germany, the song became a hit there too. Another number one hit in Italy that year was Addio mondo crudele . During the 1960s, di Capri also appeared in a number of smaller film roles. Due to the great popularity of di Capris and his group, they were able to appear as the opening act for the Beatles at their Italian concerts in 1965 . As a result, they also recorded some Beatles covers. When it was already beginning to get quieter around him, the singer took part with Dedicato all'amore (together with Dionne Warwick ) at the Sanremo Festival in 1967 , but missed the final.
At the end of the 1960s, di Capri suffered professional and private setbacks, but in 1970 he reported back with the establishment of his own record label Splash . With the song Me chiamme ammore he won the Festival di Napoli that same year . After another relatively unsuccessful participation in Sanremo in 1971 with L'ultimo romantico (together with Pino Donaggio ) the success of the single Amare di meno gave di Capri's career a boost the following year and at the Sanremo Festival in 1973 he was able to perform with Un grande amore più to reach first place. The song also became a number one hit. A few minor single successes followed until the singer returned to Sanremo in 1976 and won a second time with Non lo faccio più .
In the following years, the singer released new singles and albums unabated, but could no longer build on previous successes. From 1980 he regularly took part in the Sanremo Festival again - with mixed success: 1980 with Tu cioè… , 1985 with E mo 'e mo' , 1987 with Il sognatore , 1988 with Nun chiagnere , 1989 with Il mio pianoforte and in 1990 with Evviva Maria . For the Eurovision Song Contest 1991 , which took place in Rome , di Capri was selected internally as the representative of the host country; with the Neapolitan song Comme è ddoce 'o mare he reached seventh place there. This was followed by Sanremo participations in 1992 (Favola blues) , 1993 (La voce delle stelle) , 1995 ( Ma che ne sai se non hai fatto il pianobar , as a trio Melody with Gigi Proietti and Stefano Palatresi ), 2001 (Pioverà [Habibi ené] ) and 2005 (La panchina) .
In 2005 Peppino di Capri was honored with the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (Commander) by President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi . In the comedy Natale col boss in 2015, the singer appeared again in a film role; for the soundtrack of the film he recorded the song Fiumi di champagne together with the rapper Guè Pequeno .
