procedure

The Ariston Theater, venue of the Sanremo Festival

After the overall rather disappointing output of the previous year called Rai popular presenter Paolo Bonolis the festival in 2005. He shared the artistic direction with Gianmarco Mazzi , who in 2004 Tony Renis had assisted in moderating stood him Antonella Clerici and Federica Felini aside . Bonolis introduced fundamental changes. Not only was the newcomer category reintroduced, but the main category was also divided into four further categories: Classic (old stars), Donne (women), Uomini (men) and Gruppi (music groups). The demoscopic juries decided on the final entry of three entries per category, in the final round the television audience was able to choose the festival winner from the five category winners via televoting . Another decisive innovation was the introduction of the “duet evening” on Friday, on which the participants were able to present their contributions in a new version with the participation of guests.

In the newcomer category, twelve participants entered the race, in the other four categories five each. Among them were six former Sanremo winners: Marco Masini , Toto Cutugno , Umberto Tozzi , Peppino Di Capri , Matia Bazar and Alexia . Other familiar names were Gigi D'Alessio , Francesco Renga , Paolo Meneguzzi , Antonella Ruggiero and Anna Tatangelo . In addition, the 81-year-old Nicola Arigliano returned to the festival after more than 40 years. Among the newcomers, the two bands Modà and Negramaro made their debut , but neither of them had any luck in the competition and were eliminated in the preliminary round. The guest list included personalities as diverse as Mike Tyson , Michael Bublé , Will Smith and Vasco Rossi ; Povia also presented the song I bambini fanno “ooh…” , which then turned into an undreamt-of number one success.

The 2005 edition turned out to be a great success with the public. In the final, Toto Cutugno and Annalisa Minetti won with Come noi nessuno al mondo among the old stars, Antonella Ruggiero with Echi d'infinito among the women, Francesco Renga with Angelo among the men, Nicky Nicolai and the Stefano Di Battista Jazz Quartet with Che mistero è l'amore for the groups and Laura Bono with Non credo nei miracoli for the newcomers. In the televoting, Francesco Renga was able to prevail as the overall winner. The critic's award went to Nicola Arigliano with Colpevole . However, the final evening was overshadowed by the tragic death of the secret service employee Nicola Calipari in Baghdad .

Even more successful than Francesco Renga, however, was guest Povia with I bambini fanno “ooh…” , which then stayed at the top of the charts for 20 weeks.
