Tony Renis
Tony Renis (* 13. May 1938 in Milan as Elio Cesari ) is an Italian singer , actor and music producer .
Career
Cesari practiced singing and composition early on and appeared for the first time in the mid-1950s together with Adriano Celentano , with whom he formed a duo based on Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis . The two - Cesari already under his pseudonym Tony Renis - performed regularly in dance halls in Milan. In 1958 Renis published his first singles on Combo Record by Gorni Kramer , which are mostly cover versions of well-known Italian and international songs. The following year he moved to La Voce del Padrone and in 1960 won the Sei giorni della canzone competition with Tenerezza . At the Sanremo Festival in 1961 , Renis and Niki Davis presented the song Pozzanghere , which did not make it to the final.
Already in 1962 the singer returned (along with Emilio Pericoli ) back to Sanremo. The presented song Quando, quando, quando reached fourth place in the finals, but later number one in the charts and also developed into an international success. In 1963 the song also won the Canzonissima competition . In the same year Renis and Pericoli again took part in the Sanremo Festival and this time won with the single Uno per tutte . The song co-written by Renis was also able to achieve third place in the interpretation of Pericoli at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1963 . Also the festival in 1964 was not Renis, I sorrisi di sera (presented together with Frankie Avalon ), however, did not come again in the final. He also recorded the children's songs Cara fatina and Lettera a Pinocchio in collaboration with Quincy Jones . Further Sanremo participations followed in 1968 ( Il posto mio with Domenico Modugno ) and 1970 ( Canzone blu with Sergio Leonardi ).
As a songwriter Renis (mostly in collaboration with Alberto Testa ) a. a. with Quando dico che ti amo (1967, for Annarita Spinaci and Les Surfs ; second place in Sanremo) and Grande, grande, grande (1972, for Mina ) further successes. He was also able to distinguish himself as a producer and worked with Julio Iglesias , Nikka Costa , Diana Ross and Lionel Richie . At times Renis lived and worked in the USA . As early as the 1960s, he also appeared in a number of Italian musical comedies and starred in a 1976 film adaptation of The Black Corsair . With a disco version of Quando, quando, quando (as Disco Quando ), Renis reached the Italian charts for the last time in 1978. In 1999 he won a Golden Globe as co-author with the song The Prayer , which, as interpreted by Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion, formed the theme song of the film The Magic Sword - The Legend of Camelot , and was nominated for an Oscar .
The Sanremo Music Festival in 2004 supervised Reni's first artistic director. Another success was the movie song Merry Christmas in Love (from Christmas in Love , 2005), for which he was again nominated for the Golden Globe and won the David di Donatello . In the following years he continued to work as a producer for Andrea Bocelli and also for the trio Il Volo .
