The 20th edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place in 1970 from February 26th to 28th in the municipal casino in Sanremo and was moderated by Nuccio Costa , Enrico Maria Salerno and Ira Fürstenberg .

procedure

The municipal casino, venue of the Sanremo Festival

On the occasion of the 20th anniversary, the festival in 1970 was accompanied by several events in advance: Nunzio Filogamo, Pippo Baudo, Enzo Tortora and Fausto Tommei presented a retrospective in which u. a. Achille Togliani , Giorgio Consolini , Carla Boni , Iva Zanicchi , Sergio Endrigo , Bobby Solo and Gigliola Cinquetti performed; There were also various concerts and the film premiere of Easy Rider . This time the festival was organized by Ezio Radaelli and Gianni Ravera . 26 songs were admitted, each presented in two versions by 52 performers; 14 songs qualified for the final on Saturday on the first two evenings.

Under pressure from Edoardo Vianello (on behalf of the Unione Cantanti Italiani ), the field of participants was again more nationally oriented, only four singers ( Mal , Rocky Roberts , Sandie Shaw and Antoine ) were not from Italy ( there was a controversy about Nino Ferrer ) the proportion of newcomers was reduced. Claudia Mori made her debut at the side of her husband Adriano Celentano , with whom she had already landed a joint number one hit in 1967. High school students Lucia Rizzi and Dino Drusiani also took part as winners of the Castrocaro Festival . After a chart success last year, Dori Ghezzi also tried her first time in Sanremo, as did Patty Pravo , who had previously delivered a number of hits. The song La prima cosa bella by Nicola Di Bari , originally intended for Gianni Morandi , was assigned to the Ricchi e Poveri group, newly discovered by Franco Califano (after Morandi had withdrawn his participation at short notice, as in the previous year) . In addition, 16-year-old Rosalino (later Ron ) started his career in Sanremo that year.

On the first evening, Antoine and Adriano Celentano attracted special attention with their specially designed shows. The second evening, on the other hand, was mainly characterized by the failure of the groups: Dik Dik , Ragazzi della via Gluck , i Domodossola and the Supergruppo all dropped out prematurely. Also Rita Pavone came surprisingly not the final. Celentano celebrated his first victory there (together with his wife), ahead of Nicola Di Bari and Ricchi e Poveri as well as Sergio Endrigo and Iva Zanicchi (whose environmental song L'arca di Noè was the favorite in the second semifinals).
