The ninth edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place in the municipal casino in Sanremo from 29 to 31 January 1959 and was moderated by Enzo Tortora and Adriana Serra .
procedure
The victory of the innovative Nel blu dipinto di blu last year created a spirit of optimism among the audience and organizers of the festival. Organizer Achille Cajafa , who died in a car accident 17 days before the start of the event, had hired new conductors ( Gianni Ferrio and William Galassini ) and a new pair of moderators. The field of participants once again consisted of both debutants (six of a total of 17 participants, including Betty Curtis ) and long-established singers such as Nilla Pizzi , Gino Latilla and Claudio Villa . The winners of the previous edition, Domenico Modugno and Johnny Dorelli , also took part again.
The competition rules remained unchanged. Each song was presented in two versions, half on the first and the rest on the second evening. Only a total of ten songs could qualify for the final after the jury vote. As in the previous year, Domenico Modugno and Johnny Dorelli were able to prevail with the song Piove , albeit this time just ahead of the second-placed Arturo Testa and Gino Latilla. It was the only case in the history of the Sanremo Festival that two interpreters could win two years in a row.
The public interest had reached an enormous level; In addition to the estimated 20 million television viewers, the hotels in Sanremo were filled with fans and autograph hunters. More suffering was u. a. Claudio Villa, who had to appear on the evening of the final with a dislocated shoulder that he had contracted during a rush of fans.
