The 44th edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place in 1994 from February 23rd to 26th at the Teatro Ariston in Sanremo and was moderated by Pippo Baudo with Cannelle and Anna Oxa .

procedure

The Ariston Theater, venue of the Sanremo Festival

This year Pippo Baudo finally took over the entire artistic direction of the festival, in addition to his role as a moderator. The singer Anna Oxa and the Guadeloupian model Cannelle were at his side as comedians . Also Antonella Clerici took on a supporting role. The talk show Dopofestival was hosted by Baudo together with Mara Venier as well as with Roberto D'Agostino and Renato Zero . After two years, the eliminations in the main category were abolished in 1994: all 20 entries made it to the final. In the newcomer category, however, eight out of 18 entries were eliminated.

Among the participants, the group Squadra Italia stood out, to which eleven musicians (modeled on a football team ) had come together, including a number of old stars of the festival such as Nilla Pizzi , Jimmy Fontana , Wilma Goich and Wess . A big surprise was the return of Claudia Mori , who performed with a song by Toto Cutugno . Other well-known names in the competition were Michele Zarrillo , Donatella Rettore and Loredana Bertè . Laura Pausini was the favorite after her success in the newcomer category last year; Aleandro Baldi and Gerardina Trovato returned alongside her . The comedian Giorgio Faletti caused a stir with the song Signor tenente . In the newcomer category, u. a. Andrea Bocelli , Irene Grandi and Giorgia . Well-known international guests were Elton John , Phil Collins , Take That and Jamiroquai .

The critics award went to Faletti and in the newcomer category to the band Baraonna , which did not make it into the final. Among the newcomers, Bocelli was able to secure victory with Il mare calmo della sera , while in the main category an unexpected duel between Faletti and Aleandro Baldi emerged. Favorite Laura Pausini only managed third place with Strani amori , Baldi finally won the race with Passerà .

successes

The successes in the competition were practically not reflected in the charts in 1994: only three entries from the festival reached the top 25 of the Italian single charts, by far the most successful was Laura Pausini.
