Giovanni "Giò" Di Tonno (born August 5, 1973 in Pescara ) is an Italian pop singer and musical performer .

Career

At the age of eight, Di Tonno began to learn the piano . A few years later he began to write his own songs, inspired by cantautori such as De André , Guccini or Fossati . As a teenager he made experiences as a singer with various music groups. In 1993, he took with the song La voce degli Ubriachi competition Sanremo Giovani and was able for the Sanremo Music Festival in 1994 qualify. There he entered the newcomer category and was able to reach tenth place with Senti uomo . Then his first self-titled album was released, u. a. in collaboration with Vince Tempera .

The following year Di Tonno took part with Padre e Padrone in the main category of the Sanremo Festival, but missed the final. He turned increasingly to music theater and was ultimately selected by Riccardo Cocciante for the role of Quasimodo in the Italian production of the musical Notre Dame de Paris . With this role he became known to a wide audience between 2002 and 2004. In 2005 he was also featured in two songs on the Italian soundtrack of the animated film Heaven and Chicken (Chicken Little) .

After further musical projects (e.g. in a production by Jekyll & Hyde from 2006), several television appearances and sporadic work as a singer and songwriter, Di Tonno took part in 2008 together with Lola Ponce (who had already stood by his side in Notre Dame de Paris as Esmeralda had) participated in the Sanremo Festival again. The presented song Colpo di fulmine was written by Gianna Nannini and emerged as the winner of the competition. It then also reached the top of the Italian charts. Di Tonno included it in his album Santafè . At the end of the year he also took part in the football team Nazionale italiana cantanti for the first time .

In 2010 the singer was awarded the Premio Persefone for his numerous musical performances . He also had several television appearances and won the 2012 game show Tale e Quale show of Carlo Conti on RAI 1 . Together with the singer Mietta , he also won a special edition of the show in 2013. In 2014 Di Tonno released his next album Giò .
