The 49th edition of the Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo took place in 1999 from February 23rd to 27th at the Teatro Ariston in Sanremo and was moderated by Fabio Fazio with Laetitia Casta and Renato Dulbecco .

After the less successful edition of the previous year, this time the Rai entrusted the popular moderator Fabio Fazio with the moderation and artistic direction of the festival (he had already been in discussion in 1998). At his side were the model Laetitia Casta and the Nobel Prize winner Renato Dulbecco . The mixing of newcomers and main categories was abolished, so that the 14 participants again competed in completely separate competitions. In addition, the voting system underwent a major innovation: in addition to the usual votes of the demoscopic juries, the votes of an expert jury (giuria di qualità) , consisting of Ennio Morricone , Maurizio De Angelis , José Carreras , Amadeus , Umberto Bindi and Enrico , came in the final evenings of both categories Brizzi , Dario Salvatori , Toquinho , Carlo Verdone and Fernanda Pivano .

The favorite of the competition was Antonella Ruggiero with the song Non ti dimentico (Se non ci fossero le nuvole) , after finishing second last year. The selection of guests in 1999 was striking: Fazio had invited such diverse personalities as Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong , Pierluigi Collina , Leslie Nielsen and Roger Moore , Carla Fracci and Mikhail Gorbachev . Among the musical guests were Cher , Blur , Ricky Martin , REM , Mariah Carey , Alanis Morissette , Lenny Kravitz , Gianni Morandi , Ivano Fossati and Riccardo Cocciante .

Alex Britti won the newcomer category with Oggi sono io , the critics award went to the band Quintorigo with Rospo . In the final on Saturday, Ruggiero finally had to admit defeat to Anna Oxa and the song Senza pietà , while Mariella Nava landed third with Così è la vita . Daniele Silvestri won the Critics' Prize with Aria .
