Albano Carrisi (2007)

Albano Carrisi (born May 20, 1943 in Cellino San Marco , Brindisi ) is an Italian singer and winemaker . His stage name is Al Bano . He became internationally known as part of the music duo Al Bano & Romina Power .

The beginnings

Carrisi comes from a southern Italian farming family. He dropped out of school at the age of 17 and decided to go to Milan , where he first found work as a laborer, then as a waiter and later as a metal worker. While working in a restaurant that was frequented by personalities from show business, he met Adriano Celentano through a demo tape . He recorded his first record La Strada , a cover by Gene Pitney from 1965, and began to sing in the framework of Celentano's performances without giving up his work.

In the fall of 1965 he took part in the pre-event for the Sanremo Festival . He didn't win, but was signed by Voce del Padrone, who had him perform in a duet with Pino Donaggio at the Festival delle Rose in 1966 . He also made his television debut on Settevoci , a variety and music show hosted by Pippo Baudo , where he managed to win the "Applause Vote" four weeks in a row. The winner was determined using a device that measured the strength of the applause from the audience in the hall. In one of the broadcasts he presented Io di notte , one of his compositions, enriched with blues , which aroused the interest of the Italian pop singer Milva . She later made her own version of this.

The first successes

Al Bano & Romina Power 1976

In 1967 he had his first major success: the song Nel sole , a finalist in the summer hit of the year competition organized by the state media authority RAI , reached first position in the singles' sales charts . His voice, endowed with an enormous range of sounds, brought him into the limelight and earned him great recognition from the public and the press, who were already talking about a second Claudio Villa . Nel sole also became the title of a film in which Al Bano appears as the leading actor, as does her young colleague Romina Power . A love relationship developed between the two, which later resulted in a wedding, despite objections from both families.

The singles L'oro del mondo and Il ragazzo che sorride were released , the latter with a text by Mikis Theodorakis , who was inspired by the tragic events of the Colonnelli's inauguration in Greece around 1967. In 1968 he took part in the Sanremo Festival for the first time with La siepe , which received the special jury prize. In 1969 he won the summer hit competition with the song Pensando a te . By 1970 he starred in another six films.

The flowering phase from 1970–1991

Romina Power with Al Bano at the Grand Prix Eurovision de la Chanson 1976

On July 26, 1970, he married Romina Power, the daughter of actor Tyrone Power . The marriage resulted in four children: Cristel, born 1985, Romina Jr., born 1987, Yari, born 1973 and the eldest daughter Ylenia Carrisi , born 1970. The two also became a professional couple; In 1969 he recorded Cori di Acqua di mare with her and in 1970 Storia di due innamorati .

In 1975 they released Dialogo (I), and in 1976 they took part in the Grand Prix Eurovision de la Chanson with We'll Live It All Again . When she signed a contract with the small record label Baby Records, the most successful period of her career began in the early 1980s. They produced their greatest hits Sharazan , Felicità and Tu, soltanto tu in the Union studio in Munich . In 1982 they achieved second place with Felicità at the Sanremo Festival. They won the festival in 1984 with Ci sarà and in 1985 they appeared again at the Grand Prix with Magic Oh Magic .

In 1996 Al Bano returned to his career as a solo artist with the song È la mia vita ( Sanremo 1996 ). This was followed by further publications without Romina with Verso il sole ( Sanremo 1997 ) and Ancora in volo ( Sanremo 1999 ).

Private life

In 1999 the couple divorced. He has two children with his new partner, TV presenter Loredana Lecciso, with whom he lived from 2001 to November 2005. He describes himself as a practicing Catholic .

He was on the third season of Raidue's reality show L'isola dei famosi ( Island of the Famous ), but while on Samanà his partner said she wanted to leave him and take the two children with her. He then voluntarily left the show on October 19, 2005.

He inherited the Azienda Vinicola Tenute Al Bano Carrisi winery, based in Cellino San Marco , from his father Don Carmelo . He used his knowledge of marketing and winemaking to make it a well-known trademark. The most famous wine is the Don Carmelo, named in memory of his father. The company also runs as a pizzeria and country hotel. In recent years, he was often on his estate, and so he joined the project by Massimo Ferrarese, president of the umbrella organization of the industry in Brindisi , by sponsoring the basketball team would like to convey Brindisi's back up. The Al Bano winery has been advertising on the jerseys of the second division team since 2005.

The disappearance of the daughter Ylenia

In 1994, Ylenia , the eldest daughter of Carrisi and Power, disappeared . The parents published a missing person report: Even before the separation and later divorce, the couple released the album Emozionale with many allusions to the mysterious disappearance of his daughter. Especially the single Dammi un segno ( give me a sign ) is about the sadness of parents.

In 2005, Carrisi was confronted in a live broadcast on Italian television with information that the Spanish journalist Lydia Lozano wanted to know. Accordingly, daughter Ylenia is still alive and has settled in Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic). She doesn't want any contact with her family. Carrisi denied this on the show and left the studio in front of the cameras. Nevertheless, Carrisi and Power had a private meeting with Lozano. While Power believes the daughter is still alive, Carrisi thinks Ylenia committed suicide . Her whereabouts are still unclear today. In December 2014, at the instigation of her father, she was pronounced dead by an Italian court.

Plagiarism process

In the 1990s, Al Bano led a plagiarism lawsuit against Michael Jackson because he had used long passages from Al Bano's song I cigni di Balaka (album L'amore è semper amore caro ) for the hit Will You Be There ( Dangerous , 1993) . The offending melody was, however, traced back to earlier works by the defense, especially Bless You (For Being an Angel) (1939) by Ink Spots . Al Bano ultimately lost the case and the parties settled out of court.
