Milva (born July 17, 1939 as Maria Ilva Biolcati in Goro , † April 23, 2021 in Milan ) was an Italian singer and actress . She sang in several languages - including German - and was also internationally successful. She was nicknamed La Rossa ("the red one").

Life

Milva won a competition with the Italian television company Rai in 1961 and reached 3rd place at the Sanremo Festival . After that, she became a star in Italy. From her marriage, which lasted from 1961 to 1969, to her then manager and sponsor Maurizio Corgnati , there was a daughter, born in 1963, the art critic Martina Corgnati .

In 1965 Giorgio Strehler signed her to the Piccolo Teatro in Milan . Milva later said about it: "The theater became my great passion, and I worked a lot and very closely with Giorgio Strehler." In 1978 she recorded the single Living together with the music of Mikis Theodorakis (text: Thomas Woitkewitsch ) and became through it also known in the German-speaking area. Numerous concerts, tours and other German-language recordings followed, of which Freedom in My Language ( Ennio Morricone , Thomas Woitkewitsch) and Hurray, We're Still Living ( Klaus Doldinger , Thomas Woitkewitsch) were the most successful.

Milva took part in the Sanremo Festival a total of fifteen times between 1961 and 2007 . There Tango italiano was her greatest success in 1962 in second place. She holds the record with the most participations without a win. In the 1980s she acted in several feature films. The committed socialist also made a name for herself with songs by Bertolt Brecht . Milva has appeared on numerous music shows on television programs in Central, Western and Southern Europe. She sang her songs not only in Italian , but also in English , German, French, Spanish, Greek, Portuguese and Japanese.

In addition to the chanson , Milva was an interpreter of Astor Piazzolla and worked on various tango recordings with himself and groups in his tradition. Her most successful album in Germany (up to number 7 in the charts) was Von Tag zu Tag with songs by the Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis, which was also produced in an Italian (La mia età) and a French (Attends, la vie) version . In August 2008 Milva performed together with Montserrat Caballé and Angelika Milster on the Theaterplatz in Dresden at Diva Maxima .

In 2010, Milva announced that she would no longer perform for health reasons. She suffered from memory problems. Her last album contains songs by Franco Battiato . In 2011, Milva and Stephan Sulke recorded the song that Sulke wrote in 1984, Das muss geht noch auf in a duet. This new version was released in 2011 on Sulke's album Ducks I should have bred . In March 2012 she performed in the Musikantenstadl .

Milva was nicknamed La Rossa ("the red one"), not only because of her hair color, but also because of her political views. She lived in Milan and died there after a long illness in April 2021 at the age of 81.
