María de Montserrat Bibiana Concepción Caballé i Folch [ munsəˈrat kəβəˈʎe ] (born April 12, 1933 in Barcelona ; † October 6, 2018 ibid) was a Spanish opera singer ( soprano ). She was considered one of the most important opera singers and with over 4000 appearances as the last great opera diva .

Career

Caballé studied singing in Barcelona and Milan and made his debut at the Basel Theater in 1956 as Mimi in Puccini's La Bohème . She also sang at the theater in Saarbrücken . From 1959 to 1962 she was employed at the theater of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen . In 1965 she stepped in for Marilyn Horne in a concert performance of Donizetti's opera Lucrezia Borgia at Carnegie Hall and delighted the audience. In the same year she made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York as Margarethe in Gounod's Faust , which made her internationally known. Caballé was a frequent guest at festivals (including in Glyndebourne ), and since 1971 she has also appeared regularly at the Hamburg State Opera . She also appeared frequently as a concert singer.

Her extensive repertoire focused primarily on the operas by Rossini , Donizetti and Bellini , but also by Verdi and Puccini . Her lyrical voice was characterized by sensual beauty and an extraordinary piano .

In 1997 Mike Moran produced her album Friends for Life , which contains duets with Caballé and various singers, u. a. Bruce Dickinson , Johnny Hallyday , Johnny Logan , Gino Vannelli and Helmut Lotti . In 1998 Caballé was awarded a Bambi . In 2007 she received the ECHO Klassik music award for her life's work.

On April 1, 2007, Montserrat Caballé returned to the Vienna State Opera for the first time in 18 years . At the side of Natalie Dessay , Juan Diego Flórez and Janina Baechle she played the role of Duchesse de Crakentorp in Donizetti's La fille du régiment (The Regiment's Daughter ) in a co-production of the Vienna State Opera, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and the Metropolitan Opera New York . Despite her old age, she performed in Kiev in June 2018. Caballé had discovered and promoted the tenor José Carreras .

Private

Caballé married the tenor Bernabé Martí (* 1928) in 1964 , and the marriage lasted until her death. Their daughter, Montserrat Martí Caballé (known as "Montsita"), is also a soprano. Caballé also has a son and a grandchild.

In 2014, Caballé was sentenced to six months suspended prison sentence and a fine of 240,000 euros for tax evasion. She died on October 6, 2018 at the age of 85 and was buried in the family vault in the Cementerio of Sant Andreu in Barcelona.
