Natalie Dessay (born April 19, 1965 in Lyon ; actually Nathalie Dessaix ) is a French opera singer ( coloratura soprano ).

Dessay grew up in Bordeaux . Originally she wanted to be a dancer, but studied acting and singing at the conservatory in Bordeaux. In 1985 she graduated with a first prize. In 1989 she won second prize in the Concours des Voix Nouvelles, which was held for the first time, and then went on to study at the Paris Opera.

repertoire

In 1992 she sang Olympia in Hoffmann's Tales at the Opéra Bastille (she also sang the role, for example, in the production for the reopening of the Lyon Opera in 1993 and in her debut at La Scala ). The following year she had her first engagement at the Vienna State Opera (Blondchen in the Abduction from the Seraglio ). In 1994 she sang Queen of the Night in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte at the Aix-en-Provence Festival , conducted by William Christie in a production by Robert Carsen.

In the 2001/2002 season she was canceled from most performances at the Vienna State Opera due to illness. In 2001 she sang Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor for the first time . In February 2003 she had a successful comeback in Paris and at the Metropolitan Opera in New York . In 2004 she sang Amina in La sonnambula by Bellini for the first time , and her concert recording from Lyon in 2006 was also released on CD. Also in 2004 she sang Manon von Massenet for the first time , which was released in 2007 by Virgin Classics (with Rolando Villazón ).

On April 1, 2007 she sang Marie in Gaetano Donizetti's La fille du régiment at the Vienna State Opera (premiere). For the first time she sang Violetta Valéry in the Traviata in Santa Fe under Laurent Pelly and in 2011 in Aix-en-Provence and Vienna, in 2012 at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

In June 2013 Natalie Dessay announced in an interview that she would soon retire from the opera stage and would only appear as an actress in the future. The main reason she gave was that there were no longer adequate opera roles for her age and her vocal subject.

Since then she has increasingly turned to chanson . Her album Entre elle et lui (avec Michel Legrand) was released on October 20, 2013 . She gave a joint concert with Michel Legrand on June 11, 2014 in the orangery of the Palace of Versailles .
