Véronique Gens (born April 19, 1966 in Orléans ) is a French opera singer ( soprano ).

Life

The daughter of a doctor studied English and initially wanted to become a translator. However, after receiving first prize from the Paris Conservatory , shortly afterwards, in 1986, she made her debut as a member of the Les Arts Florissants ensemble . Within a short time she acquired the reputation of being one of the sought-after baroque interpreters of her time. As early as 1989 she was heard in a production of Henry Purcell's The Fairy Queen in Aix-en-Provence . Since then she has been able to a. Roles by Monteverdi , Lully , Rameau , Marais and Cavalli . In addition to the opera, she dedicated numerous recordings to the motets by Delalande , Boismortier and Alessandro Scarlatti as well as the cantatas and chamber duets by Handel . Gens worked closely with her sponsor William Christie , but also with conductors such as René Jacobs and Philippe Herreweghe .

Her second mainstay alongside the Baroque is the repertoire of Mozart , which she developed for the first time under Jean-Claude Malgoire . In 1994 she played the role of Countess Almaviva ( Le nozze di Figaro ) at the Lyon Opera with outstanding success. In the same season she also sang Mozart's Requiem . In the summer of 1998/1999 her interpretation of Donna Elvira ( Don Giovanni ) found great recognition under Claudio Abbado . The production by Peter Brook was seen first at the Festival of Aix-en-Provence, and later in Sweden, Belgium, Italy and Japan. She was engaged several times as Vitellia ( La clemenza di Tito ) and Pamina ( The Magic Flute ). Between 2006 and 2011 she performed tragic French arias under the direction of Christophe Rousset , which were recorded on three CDs under the title Tragédiennes français .

Véronique Gens has received numerous awards. In 2002 the soprano was nominated for a Victoire de la Musique for Best Singer of the Year.
