Life

After graduating from Sint-Barbaracollege , a Jesuit college in the Savaanstraat in Ghent, Herreweghe studied at the Ghent Conservatory with Marcel Gazelle (piano), Johan Huys (harpsichord) and Gabriel Verschraegen (organ). After completing his musical training, he studied medicine and specialized in psychiatry. Already during his student days he led a choir. His ensemble, which in the beginning still had amateur status, attracted the attention of musicians such as Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Gustav Leonhardt . Herreweghe is now one of the most important protagonists of historical performance practice . In 1970 he founded and since then has headed the Collegium Vocale Gent , which dealt with pre-baroque music as well as making pioneering recordings of the cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach . In 1989 the choir was joined by an ensemble playing on original instruments. Herreweghe is also director of the Paris- based “Orchester des Champs Elysées”. Since 1999 he has been the first conductor of the “Royal Philharmonic of Flanders” based in Antwerp . In 1982 he took over the artistic direction of the early music festival in Saintes . In 2010 the company founded its own CD label "phi". The first recording was for Gustav Mahler's 4th Symphony .
