Christophe Rousset (born April 12, 1961 in Avignon ) is a French harpsichordist and conductor .

Christophe Rousset, who grew up in Aix-en-Provence , was an enthusiastic harpsichordist at the age of 13. He first received harpsichord lessons from André Raynaud , then from Huguette Dreyfus at the Schola Cantorum Paris, from Kenneth Gilbert and Bob van Asperen .

In 1983 he passed the concert exam and in the same year received first prize at the 7th Musica Antiqua competition for harpsichord in Bruges (which had previously only been awarded to Scott Ross once in 1971 ). Christophe Rousset regularly gives concerts at well-known festivals and has played with important baroque ensembles: The Academy of Ancient Music , Musica Antiqua Köln , Il Seminario Musicale and La Petite Bande . As an assistant to William Christie at Les Arts Florissants , he was given the opportunity to lead the ensemble for the first time

In 1989 he played the Pièces de Clavecin by Jean-Philippe Rameau in full. This and his subsequent complete recording (1992–1994) of François Couperin's harpsichord works were awarded several prizes. In 1991 he was given a teaching position at the Paris Conservatory .

In 1991 he founded the ensemble Les Talens Lyriques . With him he performs Italian madrigals , French “Airs de Cour”, Venetian and Neapolitan opera series , French opéras comiques and tragédies lyriques .

In 1993 he received the Diapason d'or award for his recording of the harpsichord work "Pièces de Clavecin" by Joseph-Nicolas-Pancrace Royer .

In 1994 he recorded the soundtrack for the film Farinelli, the castrato with Les Talens Lyriques.

In 1995 he received the Cannes Classical Award for his recording of the Bach partitas .

In 1996, Georg Friedrich Handel's opera Riccardo Primo was recorded for the first time together with Les Talens Lyriques. He also received the German Record Prize for his recording of the harpsichord works by Gaspard le Roux .

In 1998 he received the Grammophone Award for best instrumental baroque music recording for his interpretation of Rameau's overtures. He continues to record music with the Academy of Ancient Music: harpsichord sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti , chamber music by Marin Marais with Christophe Coin viol and all of Bach's harpsichord concerts . Since 2000 Christophe Rousset has divided his time between working as a soloist, as a conductor and every summer as a teacher at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena . More recently he has also devoted himself increasingly to the works of Antonio Salieri .

In 2011 he conducted a version of Médée produced for television , directed by Stephan Metge, with Nadja Michael , Christianne Stotijn and Gaëlle Arquez among others .
