history

Sigiswald Kuijken originally founded La Petite Bande as a one-off project to record Jean-Baptiste Lully's ballet comedy Le Bourgeois gentilhomme under the direction of Gustav Leonhardt for Deutsche Harmonia Mundi . The ensemble took its name from Lully's orchestra La Petite Bande des Violons du Roi , a body with 21 string instruments at the court of Louis XIV. From the beginning, only original instruments or faithful replicas were used. The core of the initial group formed the Alarius Ensemble , which merged into La Petite Bande, and the Leonhardt Consort together with Sigiswald Kuijken and his brothers Wieland and Barthold . The recordings were followed by concerts in various European countries. La Petite Bande became a permanent ensemble based in Leuven under the artistic direction of Kuijken. After initially French baroque music was the focus, the repertoire quickly expanded to include Italian and German composers, especially Corelli, Handel and Bach. In addition, music from the classical period was performed and recorded on sound carriers, such as symphonies, instrumental concerts and vocal works by Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart . Le nozze di Figaro , Don Giovanni , Così fan tutte and The Magic Flute were recorded from Mozart's operas . Contemporary instruments were used for the first time when Haydn's The Creation was recorded in 1982. La Petite Bande made his UK debut in 1982 at the Proms with a concert of works by Bach, Handel and Rameau. Critic Barry Millington described the performance in The Musical Times as follows:

“The group has an endearing attitude of indifference to concert platform ritual: each player is dressed for a different occasion. But there is nothing casual about their playing: this is some of the best-disciplined Baroque playing to be heard today. "

“The group has a lovable attitude of indifference to the ceremonial on the concert stage: every player is dressed casually. But nothing is left to chance when it comes to their game. This is part of the highly disciplined baroque game that can be heard today. "

La Petite Bande recorded a number of operatic rarities in the first ten years, such as Rameau's Zoroastre , Zaïs and Pygmalion and André Campras L'Europe galante as well as André Grétry ’s Le jugement de Midas . During the years 2006 to 2009 the ensemble concentrated mainly on Bach, especially on the Bach cantatas with the aim of recording cantatas for the entire church year , but also his St. John Passion , St. Matthew Passion and the B minor Mass . In Bach's vocal works, Kuijken followed Joshua Rifkin's theory and only made up the choir parts with a solo vocal quartet. The singers on these recordings included Sophie Karthäuser , Gerlinde Sämann , Barbara Schlick , Elisabeth Scholl and Siri Thornhill (soprano), René Jacobs and Petra Noskaiová (alto), Christoph Genz , Christoph Prégardien and Marcus Ullmann (tenor) and Jan van der Crabben , Max van Egmond , Dominik Wörner and Harry van der Kamp (bass).

The Brandenburg Concertos of Bach was the first time since Spalla cello , recorded natural trumpet, hunting horns and the "Basse de violon" as basso continuo instrument.

On February 2, 2009 Sigiswald Kuijken received the Prize for Cultural Merit from the Flemish Government . On the following day, the advisory commission of the Ministry of Education recommended that La Petite Bande cut the 600,000 euros in annual grants. To secure the grants, Kuijken's students launched an internet petition that received 21,000 signatures. The then regional minister of education Bert Anciaux did not follow the advice of the committee and granted the grants until 2012 (reduced to 590,000 euros). In May 2012, the same commission issued another negative opinion for the period from 2013 to 2016, as a result of which all grants were canceled. As a result, the ensemble set up a non-profit foundation “Support La Petite Bande” to make up for the deficits.

Against the background of another state grant for the period from 2013 to 2016, Kuijken would like to entrust the management of the ensemble to younger musicians on a project basis. From April 2013, the French organist and harpsichordist Benjamin Alard will take over the management of the baroque ensemble in order to realize a Handel project . The “Dag van de La Petite Bande” initiative, which took place every December from 2010 to 2012 in Leuven from 2010 to 2012, is an event with three concerts and a round table discussion with international early music experts.
