Wieland Kuijken (born August 31, 1938 in Dilbeek near Brussels ) is a Belgian viola da gamba player and cellist .

Life

At the age of fifteen Wieland Kuijken began studying the piano and later the cello at the Bruges Conservatory . In 1957 he moved to the Royal Conservatory in Brussels , where he completed his studies five years later. However, he began to be interested in the viola da gamba even before that. From 1958 he was a member of the Ensemble Musiques Nouvelles , which was primarily devoted to avant-garde music, and of its branch, the Alarius Ensemble Brussels, to which he remained associated until 1972.

The Alarius ensemble focused from 1968 increasingly on the historical performance practice . Here he played with his brother, Sigiswald Kuijken , his wife Marleen Thiers and Robert Kohnen , and later also Barthold Kuijken . From 1972 the ensemble La Petite Bande and later the Kuijken string quartet emerged . He recorded numerous chamber music works with Gustav Leonhardt , Frans Brüggen and Alfred Deller . Today he is one of the popular interpreters of early music of his generation on the baroque cello and viola da gamba .

Wieland Kuijken has worked as a teacher at the Royal Conservatories of Antwerp , Brussels and The Hague since the 1970s, and since 1973 at the Tyrolean State Conservatory in Innsbruck . In 2004 he ended his teaching post. He has instructed, shaped and inspired a considerable number of musicians in the long-forgotten art of viola da gamba, including Jordi Savall .

Kuijken is regularly invited as a juror to international competitions in Bruges, Paris, Boston and Utrecht. He is a sought-after lecturer at master classes in various European countries.
