Robert Kohnen

Robert Kohnen (born June 2, 1932 in Sankt Vith ; † December 26, 2019 in Dilbeek ) was a Belgian harpsichordist and organist .

Life

Robert Kohnen studied organ at the Lemmensinstitut in Mechelen and at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels . As a harpsichordist, he was self-taught. At the beginning of his career, from 1960 to 1971 he was a pianist in the ensemble " Musiques Nouvelles " founded by Pierre Bartholomée , to which the composer Henri Pousseur also belonged. Numerous appearances have taken him to all European countries, the USA, Canada, Israel, Turkey and Japan.

In 1954 Kohnen co-founded the Alarius Ensemble with Janine Rubinlicht and Wieland Kuijken . From the end of 1968 the ensemble played a key role in Belgium in researching and promoting historical performance practice , the then new "mania" of interpreting early music.

With the Kuijken brothers and many others ( Gustav Leonhardt , Frans Brüggen , Anner Bylsma , Lucy van Dael , Ryo Terakado , René Jacobs , Paul Dombrecht , Roel Dieltiens and the bassoonist Danny Bond) of the Belgian-Dutch early music movement, he gave many Concerts and made more than 50 recordings.

For many years he was the continuo -embalist of the La Petite Bande ensemble under Sigiswald Kuijken and the Il Fondamento ensemble under Paul Dombrecht . He also appeared regularly with the Kuijken brothers in various chamber music formations.

Robert Kohnen was Professor of Harpsichord at the Royal Conservatories of Brussels and Mons until 1997 , and he also gave numerous master classes in Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, the USA and Canada.

His solo CD recordings include works by JS Bach, JJ Fux, F. Couperin, J.Ph. Rameau and J. Haydn.
