Frans Brüggen (1969)

Frans Brüggen (born October 30, 1934 in Amsterdam ; † August 13, 2014 there ) was a Dutch conductor and recorder player .

Live and act

Frans Brüggen studied recorder with Kees Otten (1924–2008) at the Conservatory of the Muzieklyceum Association (“Conservatorium van de Vereniging Muzieklyceum”) in Amsterdam and flute with Hubert Barwahser and Johan Feltkamp. He was one of the first in the Netherlands to complete his studies with a major in recorder; before that, recorder was not permitted as a major. Brüggen is regarded as one of the most important recorder players of the 20th century and as someone who contributed to a renaissance of this instrument. At the age of 21 he was appointed professor at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague . He later worked as a professor at Harvard and Berkeley . He has made a particular contribution to the rediscovery of lost masters from the 17th and 18th centuries. His interpretations of baroque and early baroque works gained enormous popularity and exerted a great influence on a large number of younger musicians. Not least because of him, the recorder was made socially acceptable again as a concert instrument.

In 1981 Brüggen founded the 18th century orchestra . From 1991 to 1994 he was director of the Dutch radio Kamerorkest . Since 1994 Brüggen has been a guest conductor with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment . In 2010 Frans Brüggen was awarded the Prins Bernhard Kulturfonds Prijs for his musical achievements . In the same year the Dutch Queen awarded him the Eremedaille voor Kunst en Wetenschap .

Brüggen owned an important collection of baroque recorders and transverse flutes, including from Pierre Jaillard Bressan and other well-known flute makers of the Baroque era , and contributed a great deal to the faithful reproduction of these instruments.
