Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment

The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (often unofficially abbreviated as "OAE") is a British orchestra founded in 1986. Its name refers to the Age of Enlightenment ( english Age of Enlightenment ); the music of this time forms the repertoire focus of the orchestra, whose members make music on historical instruments . The orchestra is based in the Southbank Center in London .

The orchestra does not have a permanent musical director, but is directed by an elected artistic group. The principal artists currently (as of 2014) are Simon Rattle , Wladimir Jurowski , Iván Fischer and Mark Elder . His other guest conductors have included Charles Mackerras , Philippe Herreweghe , Gustav Leonhardt , René Jacobs , Roger Norrington , Frans Brüggen , Ton Koopman , Marin Alsop , Sigiswald Kuijken , Ivor Bolton , Monica Huggett , Rachel Podger and Bruno Weil .

Tours have taken the OAE through numerous countries, including South America and the USA in 2002, and Southeast Asia in 2003.

The OAE's discography includes over 50 recordings, including a. with works by Henry Purcell , Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach , Georg Friedrich Händel , Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart or Joseph Haydn . Recordings of works by Franz Schubert , Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Gustav Mahler also testify to the opening of the repertoire towards the Romantic and Late Romantic periods .

The orchestra also works in the educational field, giving concerts in schools in particular in the London area and overseeing projects aimed at introducing children to playing the instrument.
