Monica Huggett

Monica Huggett (born May 16, 1953 in London ) is a British violinist , music teacher, guest conductor and artistic director of numerous baroque ensembles.

Life

Monika Hugget was born the fifth of seven children to a family with an Irish, English and French background. She received her first violin lessons at the age of 6. At the age of 16 she began studying violin at the Royal Academy of Music . At the beginning of this course she discovered her connection with the baroque violin and concentrated mainly on this instrument during her studies. Her important teachers include Manoug Parikian (1920–1987), Sigiswald Kuijken and Kató Havas .

Monica Huggett played with The English Concert under Trevor Pinnock and the Academy of Ancient Music under Christopher Hogwood in the 1970s . In 1980 she founded the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra with Ton Koopman , in which she was concertmaster until 1987. As a soloist, she has worked with many other orchestras that have dedicated themselves to historical performance practice, e. B. the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment . Monica Huggett can also be found regularly in numerous appearances and recordings with her Ensemble Sonnerie or the Trio Sonnerie and the ensemble “Hausmusik London”. She was artistic director of the Portland Baroque Orchestra and the Irish Baroque Orchestra for many years .

Huggett taught baroque violin at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag and at the Bremen University of the Arts . In autumn 2008, Monica Huggett was appointed artistic director of the Juilliard Historical Performance Program at the Juilliard School in New York. In the beginning she was able to win other well-known artists such as Jordi Savall and William Christie to this faculty .
