Blumenthal observation tower
The Blumenthal observation tower is a 44.65 meter high observation tower built in 2003 and 2004 north-east of Blumenthal , a district of Heiligengrabe in Ostprignitz in Brandenburg . It is the third highest wooden observation tower in Germany after the millennium tower and the Eichberg tower (as of 2015).
history
In May 1999, some hikers had the idea of building a lookout tower in the Blumenthal mountains . On June 8, 1999, they founded the Verein Aussichtsturmbau Blumenthal e. V. , which initially consisted of seven members. A year later, the decision was made to build the tower on the Ice Age ridge north of Blumenthal. The association presented the plans to the public in July 2001 and called on sponsors to support the project financially. In 2002 the members reforested a closed landfill in Blumenthal to compensate for the clearing of the construction site. They then felled around 1000 m³ of pine to make room for the project. Field stones and boulders demarcated the building site. By October 2002 they were able to complete the climb to the tower area. Steps made of oak and robinia wood were used. A parking lot below the ascent was created in November 2002. In January 2003, the members of the association cleared the plateau to support the preparations for the construction of the foundation . In February 2003 they leveled a hiking trail and paved it with gravel . On the way there are several information boards with tourist attractions in the area and a history of the tower. The excavation pit was built in May 2003. It covered an area of 14 meters × 14 meters with a depth of 2.5 meters. The base plate with an edge length of 10 meters was poured into it, precisely aligned with the cardinal points . The foundation was built in September 2003 and the foundation stone was laid on October 15, 2003. With the help of a special crane, the shell was erected in February 2004 to a height of 26 meters and completed in August. This year the Heiligengrabe community joined the association. The disarmament took place in mid-September, so that the inauguration took place on September 18, 2004.
Technical specifications
The location is at a height of around 97 meters above sea level . The tower has a viewing platform at a height of 36.4 meters that is accessible via 187 steps. The metal construction accounts for around 72 tons, the foundation feet 13 tons and the tower 150 tons.
