Christopher Hogwood
Christopher Hogwood, CBE (born September 10, 1941 in Nottingham , † September 24, 2014 in Cambridge ) was a British harpsichord player and internationally known conductor .
Live and act
Hogwood studied music at Pembroke College , Cambridge . He was a student of Raymond Leppard and Stanley Thurston , Rafael Puyana and Gustav Leonhardt . After a one-year scholarship in Prague, he became a harpsichordist in the Early Music Consort in London, an ensemble that also performed Renaissance music with great success .
In 1973 he founded the Academy of Ancient Music , an orchestra that makes a special contribution to historical performance practice . Since 1981 he has conducted large orchestras in the USA and directed opera performances there. In 1992 he became Professor of Early Music at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Hogwood wrote several books, including a basic musical guide to the trio sonata and a biography of George Frideric Handel .
In 2008 he received the Handel Prize from the city of Halle .
Shortly before his death, Hogwood separated from his civil partner , the English film director Anthony Fabian .
