Max van Egmond (born February 1, 1936 in Semarang ) is a Dutch singer with bass-baritone and bass voices . He is known for singing oratorios and lieder, especially in works by Johann Sebastian Bach .

Life

Max van Egmond studied singing in Hilversum with Tine van Willingen de Lorme. At the age of 18 he became a member of the Nederlandse Bachvereniging (Dutch Bach Society).

From 1965 he participated in the complete recordings of all of Bach's works by Gustav Leonhardt , Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Frans Brüggen . He recorded the St. Matthew Passion first in 1969 with Claudio Abbado and in 1970 with Harnoncourt, where he sang the bass arias. In 1973 he recorded the words of Christ with Johan van der Meer , 1977 with Charles de Wolff , 1989 with Gustav Leonhardt. In the St. John Passion he recorded the words of Christ in 1965 with Harnoncourt and the Concentus Musicus Wien , 1979 with van der Meer, 1986 with de Wolff, and in 1987 the arias with Sigiswald Kuijken and La Petite Bande .

He was involved in Harnoncourt's recordings of Monteverdi's operas, L'Orfeo in 1968 , and the first complete recording of Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria in 1971 . He has also appeared in more recent operas such as premieres at De Nederlandse Opera , 1962 Het Zwarte Blondje by Jurriaan Andriessens , 1963 Three's Company by Antony Hopkins .

In 1969 he was the soloist in Reger's Hebbel Requiem in concerts that were recorded live in the Berlin Philharmonie , with the Junge Kantorei and the Berlin Symphony Orchestra , conducted by Joachim Carlos Martini . In 1998 he sang the words of Christ in Bach's St. Matthew Passion in St. Martin, Idstein , with Elisabeth Scholl and Andreas Scholl .

Max van Egmond sang romantic songs , among others by Schubert, Schumann and Fauré, accompanied on historical instruments . Songs by Gabriel Fauré were accompanied by Jos van Immerseel on an Erard piano from 1897. Schubert's Winterreise was accompanied by Penelope Crawford on a fortepiano by Conrad Graf from 1835.

Max van Egmond taught at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam from 1980 to 1995. He held numerous master classes, including annually in Mateus , Portugal, and for 32 years (from 1978 to 2009) at the Baroque Performance Institute in Oberlin (Ohio) and then until 2018 every summer at the Academy of American Bach Soloists in San Francisco . In 2018, Max van Egmond declared his official career over, but added that he would continue to occasionally take part in musical activities. Harry van der Kamp is one of his students .
