Michael Schopper

Michael Schopper (born May 28, 1942 ) is a German opera singer ( bass baritone ).

Life

Michael Schopper went to school at the Regensburger Domspatzen grammar school and studied church music and singing at the Munich University of Music and Theater as a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation . Winning the first prize in the ARD competition in 1968 marked the beginning of an international career as a concert and opera singer. While in the first years of his career he was mainly in the central roles of his field (including Osmin , Ochs von Lerchenau , Hans Sachs , Daland , Wotan ) on the major European opera stages, in recent years his repertoire has increasingly shifted towards lied and oratorio . Historically informed performance practice plays an essential role for Schopper. He worked with conductors such as Leonard Bernstein , Nikolaus Harnoncourt , Gustav Leonhardt , Philippe Herreweghe , René Jacobs , Ton Koopman , Bruno Maderna , Joachim Martini , Fritz Reiner , Karl Richter and Reinhard Goebel .

Numerous CD and radio recordings for all major record labels bear witness to his work. Schopper taught as a professor for singing at the Richard Strauss Conservatory in Munich and at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts .
