Kurt Equiluz

Kurt Equiluz (born June 13, 1929 in Vienna ) is an Austrian chamber singer ( tenor ).

Kurt Equiluz was the alto soloist in the Vienna Boys' Choir . From 1950 he was a member of the State Opera Choir . He gained fame as an oratorio singer , especially as an evangelist in Bach's St. Matthew Passion .

Life

In his youth he was with the Vienna Boys' Choir, after his voice broke with the Rundfunkspielschar, then he sang in the Grossmann Chamber Choir under the direction of Ferdinand Grossmann . He first studied harp at the State Academy for Music in Vienna. In 1956 he got a solo contract with the Vienna State Opera. For more than three decades he was a member of the ensemble of the Vienna State Opera, where he sang mainly in buffo roles from Mozart to Stravinsky under conductors such as Herbert von Karajan , Georg Solti and Karl Böhm .

In 1983 Equiluz had to retire after a complicated meniscus operation at the Vienna State Opera. From 1981 to 1998 he was a professor at the Vienna University of Music (lied and oratorio). In February 2000 he sang Schubert's Winterreise in the Brahms Hall in Vienna. Kurt Equiluz was married to Elisabeth Equiluz (1926–2017). On June 12, 1954, his first son Wolfgang, who also became a singer, was born in Vienna.
