Ferdinand Grossmann (born July 4, 1887 in Tulln ; † December 5, 1970 in Vienna ) was an Austrian choir director , singing teacher and composer .

Life

Grossmann studied music in Linz with August Göllerich . A few years later he attended Felix Weingartner's conducting class in Vienna .

In 1923 he founded the Vienna People's Conservatory , one of the predecessor institutions of the Vienna Conservatory Private University . He later became the artistic director and in some cases also the founder of a number of important Viennese institutions that have to do with choral singing in the narrower or broader sense and which he often led to international recognition, especially the Vienna Boys' Choir .

The soprano Christiane Sorell was one of his students .

But he also worked for the Vienna Men's Choir , the Vienna Singing Association , the Vienna State Opera Choir, the Vienna State Opera Choir Concert Association and the Chamber Choir of the Vienna Music Academy for many years .

Grossmann also worked as conductor of the Academic Orchestra Association and as Kapellmeister of the Vienna Court Orchestra . Ferdinand Grossmann was artistic director of the Vienna Boys' Choir from 1939 to 1945 and again from 1956 until his death. In 1961 he received the Mozart Medal from the Mozart Community in Vienna

Ferdinand Grossmann was buried on December 11, 1970 in the Vienna Central Cemetery in an honorary grave (group 40, number 26). The Soul Mass was celebrated on December 12, 1970 in the Vienna Hofburg Chapel, with the Vienna Hofmusikkapelle performing the Mozart Requiem in his memory .

In 1982, Grossmannstrasse in Vienna- Donaustadt (22nd district) was named after him.
