Ernst Gutstein

Ernst Gutstein (born May 15, 1924 in Vienna ; † February 24, 1998 ibid) was an Austrian opera singer with a baritone voice .

Life

Ernst Gutstein studied singing at the Academy for Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, among others with Josef Witt and with the well-known chamber singer and baritone Hans Duhan . His debut as an opera singer took place in 1948 at the Landestheater Innsbruck as Don Fernando in the opera Fidelio by Ludwig van Beethoven . This was followed by engagements at the Stadttheater Hagen (1952–1953), the Theater der Stadt Heidelberg (1953–1954) and the Staatstheater Kassel (1954–1958). In the 1958/59 season he sang at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf and Duisburg . From 1959 to 1962 he was a member of the Frankfurt Opera House .

Gutstein has been part of the ensemble of the Vienna State Opera since 1963 . He was heard there in almost 20 different roles in a total of 125 performances. In Vienna he sang such diverse roles as Conte Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro , Bartolo in The Barber of Seville , Friedrich von Telramund in Lohengrin and Faninal in the opera Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss, which was considered to be his special brilliant role. He took further character games from the German repertoire and modern, including music teacher in Ariadne auf Naxos , Doctor Schön in Lulu and Alfred Ill in The visit of the Old Lady of Gottfried von Einem . In the 1995/96 season he appeared there again, still with almost all of his vocal resources, in two performances as theater director La Roche in the opera Capriccio .

Under the direction of Albert Moser (1963–1973) Gutstein was also committed to the Vienna Volksoper . There he sang in numerous new productions. In December 1965 he took over Janus in the opera Halka by Stanisław Moniuszko . In January 1967 he sang Sebastiano in the premiere of the opera Tiefland by Eugen d'Albert alongside Rudolf Schock . In February 1972 he sang the title role in the musical new version of the opera König Nicolo by Rudolf Weishappel . In the spring of 1972 the premiere of The Four Ruffians by Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari followed ; In November 1972 Gutstein took over the broom-maker Peter in Engelbert Humperdinck's fairy tale opera Hansel and Gretel in a new production. Gutstein's other premieres at the Volksoper included The Bartered Bride (1973, as Kruschina), Prussian Fairy Tale (1978, as Fadenkreutz's father) and Parisian Life (1980/81 season, as a Brazilian). In 1975 he sang archdeacon Claude Frollo at the Vienna Volksoper in the seldom performed, late romantic opera Notre Dame by Franz Schmidt . In the 1979/80 season he took on one of the leading roles in the opera Die Kluge (premiere: June 1980, director: Adolf Rott ) as part of an Orff evening ; as a “rumbling, powerful-voiced” king, he was “not without charm”. In the 1980/81 season he sang an "oppressive" Shishkov in the opera From a House of the Dead in a production of the Vienna Volksoper, which was also shown in the summer of 1981 as part of the Vienna Festival . In July 1986 he sang the speaker in Mozart's opera Die Zauberflöte at the Vienna Volksoper during the summer performances there . In the 1988/89 season he took over Lothario in the new production of the opera Mignon by Ambroise Thomas under the musical direction of Ernst Märzendorfer .

Gutstein also appeared at the Salzburg Festival . In 1955 he was heard there as Ernest in Joseph Haydn's comic opera Die Welt auf dem Monde . In 1978 and 1979 he sang the role of Faninal in the opera Der Rosenkavalier in Salzburg .

Gutstein also took part in several other opera premieres: 1962 at the Schwetzingen Festival in Wolfgang Fortner's opera In seine Garten, Don Perlimplin loves Belisa , in 1966 in the Theater an der Wien in The Black Spider by Josef Matthias Hauer and in 1975 in Zurich in A true hero by Giselher Klebe .

In the 1960s Gutstein appeared several times at the Komische Oper Berlin in productions by Walter Felsenstein . In the 1960/61 season he sang Germont-père in La traviata and Iago in Othello , alongside Anny Schlemm as Desdemona. In the 1966/67 season he was heard in the title role of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Don Giovanni . In 1964 he sang the title role of Giuseppe Verdi's opera Macbeth at the Frankfurt Opera under the direction of Harry Buckwitz, with Inge Borkh as a partner. In 1965 Gutstein was a “virtuoso Kowaljoff” in the opera Die Nase by Dmitri Shostakovich in Frankfurt .

Gutstein made guest appearances at the Covent Garden Opera in London (1986 as Graf Waldner), at the Metropolitan Opera in New York (1979–1980 as Faninal) and at the opera houses in Dallas (1982 as Faninal) and Houston (1990 as Faninal) . At the Glyndebourne Festival in 1985 and again in 1989, as partner of Elisabeth Glauser, he also sang Waldner in Arabella , and in 1987 and 1990 theater director La Roche in Capriccio .

In the 1986/87 season he was a guest at the Stadttheater Bern as a doctor in Wozzeck . In the season 1987/88 he took over the Don Magnifico in a new production of the opera La Cenerentola , in the season 1988/89 the theater director La Roche in Capriccio followed . In June 1989 he also appeared as La Roche at the Grand Théâtre de Genève . In the 1991/92 season he appeared as a supporting actor in Adolf Dresen's Lulu production at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris (October 1991, roles: medical adviser, professor and banker). He also sang the role of Schigolch in a new production of the opera Lulu in the 1991/92 season at the Innsbruck State Theater . In 1994 Gutstein took on the roles of animal tamer and schigolch at the performances of the opera Lulu in the Vienna Museum Quarter . In 1997 he sang at the Castle Festival Schönbrunn in Schönbrunn Palace , the role of the prison director Frank in the operetta Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss .

Gutstein was still artistically active as a singing teacher and music teacher until shortly before his death. He was a professor at the Vienna Conservatory . For his artistic merits he was awarded the title of chamber singer .

Ernst Gutstein's musical oeuvre, passed down through radio recordings, live recordings and records, has been largely re-released on CD in recent years.
