Margarita Lilowa

Margarita Lilowa (born July 26, 1935 in Tscherwen Brjag , Bulgaria ; † April 13, 2012 in Vienna ) was a Bulgarian- Austrian opera singer ( mezzo-soprano / alto ).

Life

Lilowa studied singing and choral conducting at the State Music Academy in Sofia with Maria Zibulka and Michail Jankow . In 1959 she made her debut as Maddalena in Rigoletto at the Varna Opera . In 1962 she made a guest appearance in London, then she was engaged by the Vienna State Opera and made her debut as Amneris in Aida on January 1st, 1963 . She belonged to the State Opera Ensemble until 1995 and sang 46 parts in 1135 performances, including 143 times Marcellina in Le nozze di Figaro and 115 times Annina in Der Rosenkavalier .

Lilowa also sang as a "permanent guest" at the Komische Oper Berlin for twelve years and at the San Francisco Opera in the USA for eleven years . She also made many guest appearances around the world and appeared at the Salzburg Festival from 1965 onwards . From 1992 she taught at the Vienna University of Music.

In 1969 she was awarded the Berlin Critics' Prize and in 1984 she was appointed chamber singer .
