Maximilian von Egmond , Count von Buren , Leerdam and Lingen , Baron and Lord of Eindhoven , IJsselstein , Jaarsveld , Sint-Maartensdijk and Cranendonck (* around 1500; † December 24, 1548 in Brussels ) was a member of the House of Egmond , as well as a Dutch General , governor of Friesland , Groningen and Overijssel and 1540 captain-general of the Netherlands.

Life

He was the son of Floris van Egmond . From early youth he had followed the imperial flag, the flag of his sovereign and the protector of his house, which was always Burgundian and Austrian, and he had taken part in all Charles V's ventures . His timely arrival at the theater of war with an auxiliary army from the Netherlands in 1546 decided the Schmalkaldic War in favor of the emperor. He had the name of one of the best generals of his time and died of an illness in his prime .

When he heard from his personal physician, the famous Vesalius , that his death was approaching, he sat in full armor on his chair, surrounded by his officers, to exhale his soul.

In 1531 he was elected to the Order of the Golden Fleece .

family

Maximilian von Egmond married Françoise de Lannoy in 1519 . His only daughter, Anna , born in 1533 , married William of Orange and was the mother of the unfortunate Philipp Wilhelm , the Count of Buren who was led to Spain and later Prince of Orange .
