Location of Sint Maartensdijk in the municipality of Tholen |
Sint Maartensdijk ( Zeeland Smerdiek ) is a town with 3,490 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) within the Dutch municipality of Tholen in the province of Zeeland .
In the beginning, Sint Maartensdijk was a place on the Hastee River called Haestinge. In 1491 Sint Maartensdijk got city rights, but had no seat in the Staten van Zeeland , which is why the place is included in the group of Smalstads . Sint Maartensdijk was a prosperous city in the Middle Ages. In 1434 Frank von Borsselen and Jakobäa von Bayern, Countess of Holland married here . Her castle on the north side of the village came by inheritance to the House of Orange . It was demolished in 1819.
Sint Maartensdijk is known for its connections with the House of Orange. Queen Beatrix has the title of Woman from Sint Maartensdijk. The monumental parish hall, which was built in 1628 with financial support from Friedrich Heinrich von Oranien , has portraits from the 17th century of the family.
In 1971, Sint Martensdijk was merged with other places to form the municipality of Tholen, but still houses the town hall.
