Tholen is a town in the municipality of the same name Tholen in the Dutch province of Zeeland . It is located on the west side of the Scheldt-Rhine Canal , the border with the province of North Brabant, and was an independent municipality until 1971. On January 1, 2017, it had 7,890 inhabitants.

The place was founded in the 13th century as a customs post on the Eendracht and received city rights in 1366 .

In 1928 the ferry between North Brabant and the city was replaced by a bridge.
