Tholen ( listen ^{? / I} ) is an island and municipality in the Dutch province of Zeeland and consists of the two connected peninsulas Tholen and Sint Philipsland .

Customs post

The name Tholen is reminiscent of the former customs post. For driving on the Eendracht and the Striene , customs were levied at that time.

location

The municipality of Tholen is connected in the south with Zuid-Beveland via the Oesterdam and in the north with Goeree-Overflakkee and Schouwen-Duiveland via the Philipsdam and the Grevelendingam . The Scheldt-Rhine Canal is to the east of the municipality .

Municipal area reforms

In 1971 the area of ​​the Tholen peninsula was combined into one municipality. The previous municipalities of Tholen , Oud-Vossemeer , Poortvliet , Scherpenisse , Sint-Annaland , Sint Maartensdijk and Stavenisse were abolished.

In a second restructuring step in 1995, the municipality of Sint-Philipsland was incorporated into Tholen.
