Grevelendam
The six-kilometer-long Grevelingenam , built from 1958 to 1965, is part of the Dutch Delta Works . It lies between Schouwen-Duiveland ( province of Zeeland ) and Goeree-Overflakkee ( province of South Holland ).
The dam is longer than the Zandkreekdam and the Veerse Gatdam . New techniques had to be developed to build this dam. Part of the dam was built with the help of cable cars . They were used to tip stones into the water at the construction site. Each gondola had a payload of ten tons. The remaining parts were washed up or built with caissons , which were sunk and filled with sand.
The Grevelendingam was not only built against the North Sea water, but also served to support the construction of the Haringvlietdam (1956-72), the Brouwersdams and the Oosterschelde storm surge barrier . If the Brouwersdam had been built first, the water would have flowed from the Grevelingenmeer via the Haringvliet or the Oosterschelde to the North Sea . But this current was undesirable.
Locks
When the dam was finished, a lock was built. It is used for professional and recreational shipping and the building material for the construction of the Brouwerdam also had to be transported through it. In order to also be able to lock the construction vehicles, the lock was 125 m long and 16 m wide, with a jamb depth of 5.5 m below Amsterdam level (NAP). In addition to the sluice, the sluice also regulates the water balance of the Grevelingenmeer . The N 59 leads over the dam. The Philipsdam connects to the southern end of the dam .
With the restart of the Flakkeese Spuisluis , which was closed since 1987 and which was also enlarged and changed in 2017, there is now a connection between the Osterschelde and the Gevelingen, both at high tide and at low tide on the Osterschelde. The water exchange has been in both directions for the first time since 2017 and is intended to help improve the water quality in Grevelingen.
