Location and transport links

To the north of Noord-Beveland lies the Oosterschelde , to the south the Veerse Meer separates the island from the Zuid-Beveland peninsula . The (former) island is very flat and is only one meter above sea level. Today , Noord-Beveland is a peninsula connected to the mainland via a peninsula . Noord-Beveland is connected to the Walcheren peninsula via the Veerse Gatdam . This fixed land connection separates the Veerse Meer from the Oosterschelde and thus from the North Sea. The Zandkreekdam is the second dam on the former island and connects to Wilhelminadorp ( Goes municipality ) on Zuid-Beveland.

Finally, the Oosterschelde storm surge barrier connects Noord-Beveland with the island of Schouwen-Duiveland in the north. To the east of this, the Zeelandbrug runs through the Oosterschelde to Zierikzee ; it was the longest bridge in Europe when it was built in 1965, and it still is for the part of Europe excluding Scandinavia and Denmark.

history

At Colijnsplaat there was a temple dedicated to Nehalennia , a Celtic-Germanic goddess, protector of fishermen and sailors. A trading post called Ganuenta arose around this temple. At the end of the third century the area was depopulated because Germanic tribes invaded and the area was regularly flooded.

Resettlement began around 700. After the great storm surge in 1014, the first dikes and terps were built. The first church in Noord-Beveland was built in Welle around 1100 This became the mother church of all medieval parish churches in Noord-Beveland, of which only the Nicolaaskerk in Kortgene still exists today. After the great storm surge of 1134, Noord-Beveland was completely diked. The St. Felix flood (Sint-Felixvloed) washed over the entire island on November 5, 1530, and the All Saints Flood in 1532, just two years later, destroyed all buildings; only the church towers of Kortgene and Wissenkerke still protruded from the water. A new nave was added to the church tower in Kortgene.

The population of Noord-Beveland came from all parts of Zeeland, but also from Flanders, Holland, the Duchy of Brabant, the Duchy of Limburg and even from Germany, France, England, Scotland and Switzerland. The dialect of Noord-Beveland indicates that most of the colonists immigrated from Schouwen-Duiveland.

In 1598, Noord-Beveland was partially polded. The villages of Colijnsplaat and Kats were established. This was followed by Wissenkerke in 1652, Geersdijk in 1668 and the rest of Noord-Beveland in 1684.

The area was badly affected by the flood disaster of 1953 ; The Kortgene dike was one of the first to break on the night of February 1, 1953.

Over time, various places in Zeeland have been affected by storm surges and the like. sunk in the sea. Noord-Beveland was not spared from this either. The following list comes from the "List of Sunken Places in Zeeland" ( Lijst van verdronken dorpen in Zeeland ) in the Dutch Wikipedia.
