The Zeelandbrug ( German  Seelandbrücke or Zeeland Bridge ), originally called Oosterscheldebrug , crosses the Oosterschelde between the islands of Schouwen-Duiveland and Noord-Beveland in the province of Zeeland in the Netherlands .

The 5 km long bridge is part of the N256 . The bridge, built between 1963 and 1965, has considerably shortened the route between Rotterdam , Bruinisse and Zierikzee in the north and Goes , Middelburg and Vlissingen in the south. It begins at Zierikzee on Schouwen-Duiveland and ends near the town of Colijnsplaat on Noord-Beveland.

The bridge was simply called Oosterscheldebrug for the first year and a half . In 1967 it got its final name Zeelandbrug .

It was the longest bridge in Europe until it was replaced by the Öland Bridge in Sweden in 1972 and this in turn by the Ponte Vasco da Gama in Lisbon in 1998 .

The Zeelandbrug was a 2015 Rijksmonument under monument protection provided.

description

The Zeelandbrug has two lanes and on the west side a cycle path separated from the road by concrete protective barriers .

The bascule bridge

The dead straight prestressed concrete bridge has 50 piers with a pillar spacing of 95 m. The carriageway girder consists of rectangular box girders of constant width, which are rigidly connected to the pillars and protrude to the middle of the respective openings with decreasing height, where they are connected to the next cantilever arm by expansion joints . The girders are so strong haunched that they create the impression of an arched bridge. Shortly before its northern end, the bridge is interrupted by a 40 m wide bascule bridge with two 20 m long housings for the folding mechanism on four separate pillars, to which 35 m long cantilever arms are connected. The two dykes and their dyke paths are each crossed with 60 m long structures.

The pillars have two widely spread supports with which they stand on their foundations in the up to 35 m deep Oosterschelde.

History, construction process

The bridge was built on behalf of the province of Zeeland because the ferry connection between Zierikzee and Kats in the east of Noord-Beveland was no longer able to cope with the increasing volume of traffic and they did not want to wait until there was a road connection across the Oosterschelde as part of the Delta Works . The Oosterschelde barrage was planned for 1978, but in fact it was not handed over to its intended use until 1986 after a re-planning.

Film about the construction of the bridge

In May 1962, two experienced Dutch companies were awarded the contract to build the bridge, which they carried out between 1963 and 1965. For this purpose, a precast plant with a factory harbor was set up in Kats , in which all the individual parts of the bridge were produced, such as prestressed concrete pipes for the pile foundation , concrete boxes for the foundations as well as the pillars and the hollow box segments for the girder. These prefabricated parts were barges down to their slot and there with the help of a floating crane installed. The box girder segments were always installed in pairs on both sides of a pillar with a front scaffolding extending over several pillars.

On December 15, 1965, the bridge was opened by Queen Juliana .

toll

The bridge was initially subject to tolls in order to pay off the construction costs and then to form a maintenance fund. The bridge has been toll-free since 1993.
