Raphael Aloysius Lafferty (born November 7, 1914 in Neola , Iowa , † March 18, 2002 in Broken Arrow , Oklahoma ) was an American science fiction and fantasy writer.

Life

He lived most of the time in his hometown of Tulsa , Oklahoma , USA . His writing career began late, not until the age of 45 that he wrote his first stories, but then wrote more than 200 short stories and 21 novels, most of which were in the science fiction genre. His first published short story was "The Wagons" in 1959, his first published novel was Past Master (German: Astrobe, the golden planet ), which was published in 1968. In it, he resurrects the English church scholar and martyr Thomas More to make him world president on the planet Astrobe. In the end he dies again as a martyr.

In the same year Lafferty published two more novels: The Reefs of Earth and Space Chantey ( Eng .: The Odyssey of Captain Roadstrum ). The latter is the Odyssey as a parody of the science fiction of the 1950s and 1960s and already contains some of the elements for which Lafferty was known: In the tone of a heroic saga, he tells ludicrous stories with absurd elements. For a long time he only wrote part-time, it wasn't until 1971 that he gave up his job as an electrical engineer to devote himself completely to writing. Due to a stroke, he retired from writing in 1984.

Lafferty used stylistic elements and in part also characters from Irish and Indian sagas , his style of mixing science fiction, fantasy and heroic epic is unique and can also be difficult to assign to a particular genre. His stories are partly shaped by his conservative religious ( Catholic ) attitude. The plot often took the strangest turns, but sometimes it was less important to him and lost in the middle of the story.

Not all of Lafferty's stories were science fiction: his novel Okla Hannali describes 100 years of Choctaw history in Mississippi and Oklahoma .

Awards

Past Master , Continued on the Next Rock , Sky were nominated for the Hugo Award , in 1973 Lafferty received the Best Short Story Hugo for the short story Eurema's Dam (together with Frederik Pohl and CM Kornbluth for The Meeting ). He was also nominated for the Nebula Award for Slow Tuesday Night , Past Master , Fourth Mansions , Continued on the Next Rock, and The Devil Is Dead , but never received it. His Lafferty in Orbit collection was nominated for a World Fantasy Award , and it contained the many stories Lafferty contributed to Damon Knight's Orbit series. In 1990 he received the World Fantasy Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Other awards:

  • 1971: Phoenix Award for Lifetime Achievement.
  • 1975: Seiun Award for the short story Eurema's Dam
  • 1993: Seiun Award for the short story Groaning Hinges of the World

In 2002 he was posthumously awarded the Cordwainer Smith Rediscovery Award for forgotten or no longer adequately recognized science fiction authors.
