Location of Kortgene in the municipality of Noord-Beveland |
Kortgene ( Kortjeen in Zeeland ) is a town with historical town rights and a former municipality on Noord-Beveland in the Dutch province of Zeeland . The population is 1,805 (as of January 1, 2017).
history
Kortgene was mentioned as a parish as early as 1247 and granted town charter in 1413 by the Jonkheer Philips van Borssele . In the period that followed, the whole town went up in flames in a violent fire, including the new church that was currently under construction.
On November 5, 1530, the whole of Noord-Beveland was flooded during the Saint Felix storm surge , which was repeated again in 1532. Almost the entire development was washed away, only the church towers of Kortgene and Wissenkerke were preserved.
The re- piling of Noord-Beveland began in 1598. In 1684 the area near Kortgene was polded again. The old church tower had apparently survived 150 years in the water and could be used again. A new nave was added to the old church tower.
After the reconstruction, Kortgene was the only place on Noord-Beveland to receive city rights again. The city of Kortgene, however, did not have a seat in the Zealand Provincial Assembly ("Staten van Zeeland"), so Kortgene can also be called a titular city .
Around 1930 discussions began about a municipal reorganization . In 1941 Colijnsplaat , Kats and the city of Kortgene were merged to form the municipality of Kortgene , which in 1995 was merged into the then newly formed municipality of Noord-Beveland .
building
In the church tower of the Nicolaaskerk hangs the "Suzanne" bell , which was stolen from the French island of Île de Noirmoutier in 1674 by the Dutch navy . This was stolen again by German occupation personnel during the Second World War , but after the liberation from German occupation , the bell was the only one of the Noord-Beveland bells to return.
In 1873 a flour mill was built, " De Korenbloem " (German: "The Cornflower "), which was restored in 2010/2011.
tourism
Various events take place in Kortgene over the course of the year, most of them in the summer: ring riding , wakeboarding , the fair , etc. Kortgene also has a port called "Delta Marina". Seen from the Zandkreekschleuse , it is the first port on Noord-Beveland on the Veersen Meer . There is also the De Paardekreek campsite .
