Borsselen (noble family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The House of Borsselen was a family of the Dutch (high) nobility.

history

The family first appeared in the middle of the 13th century as Lords of Borsselen on the Westerschelde , today a district of Borsele . The Zandenburg came to Borsselen, but above all Goes , Veere , Vlissingen , Domburg , Westkapelle , Brouwershaven , Zoutelande etc.

The family attained its greatest importance at the time of the House of Burgundy . Frank II von Borsselen († 1470) was the fourth husband of Jakobäa von Bayern , Wolfhart VI. von Borsselen († 1487) was Marshal of France and son-in-law of the Scottish King James I. The title of Count of Grandpré and Count of Ostervant as well as the close ties to the Burgundian Order of the Golden Fleece complete the picture.

The house of Borsselen died out in the male line in 1487 (older line) and 1521 (younger line). Various illegitimate and legitimate branches of the family also occurred in the course of the 16th and 17th centuries. Eventually the family died out in 1917 with Jonkvrouw Elisabeth Cornelia van Borssele.
