Durbuy and Ourthe Castle

history

The first traces of human settlement in Durbuy come from the Paleolithic Magdalenian , e. B. Heyd's menhir . The Durbuy region was on the route of the Roman road between Tongeren and Arlon . In the Middle Ages , Durbuy was an important trading center. 1331 were John of Luxembourg the town rights conferred.

Attractions

The medieval town center on the river Ourthe with narrow streets and cobblestone streets attracts 1.5 million tourists annually to the place, which is advertised as the "smallest town in the world" by the tourist office.

Le château de Durbuy

In 1731, Durbuy Castle was rebuilt on the ruins of the old castle. The current building is the result of a reconstruction from the eighteenth century and a major restoration in 1880–1882 by the Countess d'Ursel , whose family has owned the castle from 1756 until today.

L'église Saint-Nicolas

The construction of the Church of St. Nicolas began in 1630 and it was consecrated in 1643. It houses a baptismal font from the sixteenth century and borders the former monastery of Récollets.

Hall aux blés

The hall, already mentioned in 1380, dates from the time between 1530 and 1540 in its current state. It was a market hall and was home to the jurisdiction of the judiciary. The current building has been on Wallonia's exceptional heritage list since 1976 and hosts cultural exhibitions.

Parc des Topiaires

The “Jardin Topiaire” tree garden is located on the banks of the Ourthe. Most of the park consists of box trees from which artistic sculptures have been trimmed. From here you also have a beautiful view of the old town of Durbuy. With its 250 topiary figures, the park is “a green Disneyland between comedy and kitsch, perfect for a fun family outing,” wrote Christa Hasselhorst .
