Musson (German outdated: Emsong ) is a Belgian municipality in the Arrondissement of Virton in the province of Luxembourg in the French-speaking Wallonia .

Musson parish

The current municipality of Musson was formed in the course of the Belgian municipal reform on January 1, 1977 from the two municipalities of Musson and Mussy-la-Ville, plus the district of Signeulx from the neighboring municipality of Bleid (which was merged into the new municipality of Virton ).

Today the municipality consists of the districts Baranzy (554 inhabitants), Gennevaux (50 inhabitants), Musson (1764 inhabitants), Mussy-la-Ville (1114 inhabitants), Signeulx (576 inhabitants) and Willancourt (274 inhabitants), seat of the municipal administration is the place of Musson.

Geographical location

In the north the municipality borders on Saint-Léger (Belgium) , in the east on Aubange , in the south on France and in the west on Virton , the capital of the arrondissement of the same name . Politically it belongs to the Walloon Region , but linguistically it is not in the Walloon French territory , but already in the Lorraine French territory .

history

Mussy-la-Ville was first mentioned in 1096 as Muzeyum , Musson in 1202 as Messons . The small districts were first mentioned: Signeulx as Sinus (1173), Gennevaux and Willancourt as Gennevaus and Villoncourt (1234) and Baranzy as Barenzy (1396).

Until the annexation by France (October 1, 1795), the municipal area belonged to the medieval German Empire ( county or duchy of Luxembourg ), then to the newly formed French department of Forêts . After the Congress of Vienna in 1815 it was awarded to the newly founded Kingdom of the United Netherlands . The municipality has belonged to the Kingdom of Belgium since the Belgian Revolution in 1830 .

Personalities

Étienne Lenoir (1822–1900), inventor (80 patents) and businessman, was born in Mussy-la-Ville.
