Messancy ( German  Metzig , Luxembourgish Miezeg ) is a Belgian municipality in the Arlon arrondissement of the province of Luxembourg .

Messancy parish

The current municipality of Messancy was formed in the course of the Belgian municipal reform on January 1, 1977 from the five municipalities of Messancy, Habergy, Hondelange, Sélange and Wolkrange (now districts of the new municipality). The municipality consists of the following smaller towns:

history

Messancy was first mentioned in 1060 as Marseium , other districts: Buvange as Buffigen , Differt as Differt (1269), Guelf as Guldorf (1253), Habergy as Heverdingen (1480), Hondelange as Hondlange (1331), Longeau as Longawa (707), Sélange as Seylongen (1309), Wolkrange as Wolkrange (1270).

Until the annexation by France (October 1, 1795), the municipal area belonged to the medieval German Empire ( county or duchy of Luxembourg ), then to the newly formed French department of Forêts . After the Congress of Vienna in 1815 it was awarded to the newly founded Kingdom of the United Netherlands . The municipality has belonged to the Kingdom of Belgium since the Belgian Revolution in 1830 .
