Virton ( German Wirten , in the local Lorraine dialect Viertan ) is a small Belgian town in the Wallonia region with 11,332 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019). It is located in the province of Luxembourg and is the southernmost city in Belgium. The municipality borders directly on France and is only about 25 kilometers west of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg .
Virton is the administrative seat of the Arrondissement Virton . Its area corresponds roughly to the historical Gaume landscape , which is why the city is also known as the capital of the Gaume.
Virton itself consists of the eponymous core city of the districts Bleid , Ethe , Latour , Ruette and Saint-Mard .
The next motorway exits are at Habay and Arlon on the A 4 / E 25 . Virton has a regional train station . Luxembourg Airport is the closest national airport.

The city has a train station on the Athus – Libramont railway line . There used to be a connection to the Marbehan – Ecouviez railway line, which is now largely closed .
Attractions
- In the Musée de Virton , established in 1939 in the former convent of the Franciscan recollects , the visitor gets an insight into the history and culture of the Gaume. The exhibits from all epochs include more than 150 stove and fireplace plates, firebacks and stoves from Gallo-Roman times, Boch stoneware from the 18th century, wood carvings from the 16th to the 16th. 18th century as well as home furnishings and everyday objects. The museum is also the "headquarters" of the Musées Gaumais , a museum network that includes the following museums in the vicinity:
- The Musée de la Vie paysanne in Montquintin, about four kilometers southeast of the city, has been showing everyday village life in a farmhouse from the 18th century since 1965.
- The museum and the archaeological park Montauban are located on the mountain of the same name about 13 kilometers north of the city. The remains of a Roman fortress wall have been preserved on the 340 meter high mountain. The attached museum, opened in 1958, shows important Gallo-Roman reliefs as well as a replica of the so-called Gallic mower .
- The Musée Baillet-Latour is seven kilometers east of the city and has been showing the history of the local castle since 1969. Here you can also find information about the border battle of August 22, 1914 and about the two world wars.
